Hello,

I am preparing for the SC-401 exam and would like to gain more hands-on experience with Purview. I have heard the MS365 E5 trial comes with a 90 days trial of Purview. My question is, can I sign up for the trial with my personal email or does it require a work email?

Thank you.

Pierre

    Dear @Pierre Nacke,

    I hope you’re having a good day.

Yes, in many cases you can start the Microsoft 365 E5 trial process using a personal email address. During the sign-up process, Microsoft will typically guide you through creating a new Microsoft 365 business tenant (for example, yourtenant.onmicrosoft.com) and a separate administrator account for that tenant.

Since your goal is to gain hands-on experience with Microsoft Purview for the SC-401 exam, the Microsoft 365 E5 trial is generally a good option because it allows you to create a dedicated test environment and explore Purview features without needing an existing corporate tenant.

A few things to keep in mind:

    • You may be asked to provide a phone number for verification during the sign-up process.
    • Microsoft will create a separate business identity and tenant for the trial rather than simply enabling E5 features on your personal Outlook.com account.
    • Be sure to review the trial terms and subscription details during registration, including whether payment information is required and what happens when the trial period ends.
    • If you no longer need the environment after your SC-401 preparation, remember to cancel the trial/subscription before it converts to a paid service to avoid unexpected charges.

For your use case, I would simply recommend starting with the Microsoft 365 E5 trial and using the generated tenant as a lab environment to explore Purview, DLP, Information Protection, and other compliance features relevant to the SC-401 exam.

Best of luck with your studies and your SC-401 certification!

    Warm regards,
