Urgent – Locked out of Microsoft 365 Business Account due to MFA / Authenticator Loop

I urgently need help as I have exhausted all available options and am completely locked out of my Microsoft 365 business account.

I am unable to sign in because I am being asked to verify my identity using the Microsoft Authenticator app. However, when I open the Authenticator app, it asks me to add my account first — and to add the account, it requires me to confirm my identity using the same app.

This has created a verification loop that I cannot break. I never completed the initial Authenticator setup, and now I cannot access my account at all.

I have no alternative verification methods available and cannot sign in anywhere to reset or change MFA settings.

I am the account administrator and have not had access to my business account for some time. I urgently need a manual MFA reset or account recovery so I can regain access and correctly set up authentication.

Please advise on the next steps to restore access to my Microsoft 365 business account.

    Hi,

    Some methods here.

    https://yourwindowsguide.com/2026/09/how-to-reset-microsoft-mfa.html

    #1:

Reset Microsoft MFA & Recover Access to Your Microsoft 365 Admin Account using Microsoft Support

Another option is to contact Microsoft support if you are locked out of your account. Please note that this method works only for Microsoft 365 Business accounts; for consumer Outlook accounts, you must complete the recovery form as described here.

    Checklist
    • Tenant details: Your primary domain and initial onmicrosoft.com domain
    • Administrator identity: Global Administrator UPN (User Principal Name).
    • Proof of ownership: Custom domain details and access to DNS records to verify domain ownership.
    • Billing & Account verification: Subscription billing info, company name, phone number on file, and alternate contact email.
    • Partner / Reseller context: Details of former CSPs or resellers (if applicable) and any prior support ticket numbers.
Get the Country Support phone number

Next step, use this Microsoft support document to find the contact number for your country.

Customer service phone numbers – Microsoft Support

Then call the number. See the extensive details on how to reach a Human:

When you call Microsoft support to reset Microsoft MFA or resolve a forgotten password for a Microsoft 365 issue, follow these IVR prompts:

    • Wait out the intro — You may hear a ~30-second automated introduction (e.g., “you can visit the link…”). Ignore it and wait for the menu options.
    • Press 1 — Select yourself as a business email user
    • Press 1 again — Choose technical help

    Automated IVR Conversation Guide

In some regions, the initial interaction is fully automated. Use these answers to navigate it:

    1. What kind of problem are you experiencing? — Answer: Login technical support.
    2. What product are you contacting us about? — Answer: Microsoft 365 Business Standard.
    3. Is this a new case or an existing case? — Answer: New case.
    4. Are you a Global Administrator? — Answer: Yes.
    5. Are you the Global Administrator for the domain? — Answer: Yes, I am the Global Administrator for the domain.
    6. Would you like to be connected with a Microsoft representative regarding your issue? — Answer: Yes, please.
    7. If asked to verify your phone number: Confirm that the phone number is already associated with the Microsoft 365 administrator profile.

Create a Temporary Tenant to Open a Support Ticket

If you get stuck in the automated IVR loop or cannot reach a live agent via telephone, offer this practical fallback method:

    • Step 1: Sign up for a temporary Microsoft 365 Business trial account to generate a fresh tenant.
    • Step 2: Log in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center of the temporary tenant.
    • Step 3: Go to Support > New Service Request and request an escalation to the Data Protection / Tenant Recovery team on behalf of your locked original tenant.
    • Step 4: Clearly outline the locked tenant’s domain, UPN, and case history in the ticket description.
    • Step 5: Cancel the subscription immediately to avoid charges.

Dear Aisha Sharif, Thank you for posting your question on the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description, you are unable to sign in to your account because there is no alternative sign-in method available and you are unable to reset multi-factor authentication (MFA).

In this situation, please first check whether there are other Global Administrators in your organization who can assist you with resetting MFA as below guidance:

    • Go to Microsoft Entra Admin Center: https://entra.microsoft.com
    • Navigate to Users > All Users.
    • Select the affected account.
    • Go to Authentication Methods.
    • Click "Require re-register multifactor authentication".
    • User's image

If you are the only administrator in your organization, you will need to contact the Microsoft Data Protection team for further assistance. Please locate the appropriate support phone number for your country or region and contact Microsoft Support so the frontline team can raise a service request on your behalf: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

    • When calling the support number, the experience may vary depending on your country or region:
      • In some regions, you may hear an automated message for approximately 30 seconds. You can ignore this message and wait for the prompt, then select “1” for Business email user and “1” again for Technical support.
      • In other regions, you may be guided through an automated conversation similar to the following:
        • The system asks what issue you are experiencing: Authenticator
        • Product in use: Office 365 for Business
        • Account type: Company account
        • Administrator status: Yes
        • Are there other administrators in the organization?: No
        • Proceed to create a service request: Yes

If your Office 365 Business or Education subscription was purchased through a partner or reseller, and you are unable to open a service request directly, please contact your reseller’s support provider and ask them to raise the service request on your behalf.

Please note that forum moderators do not have the ability to access or modify user accounts, including login issues, password resets, or MFA changes.

I hope the Microsoft Data Protection team will be able to assist you in restoring access.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. I hope the information above is helpful. If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out.
