Changing Microsoft Account Email

Hiya Everyone,

Thanks for your interest in helping me find a solution!

I have an email address that I have had for many years, linked to my Xbox, Microsoft, Outlook, and whatnot, something I am wanting to switch to my new email address I have made. My long-term email is an @hotmail.co.uk and I have recently made an @hotmail.com. I have linked them in the sense that for the main email, I can use the new email as a recovery backup, however when I go to the Alias section and attempt to add the new email address there, I get the following error message:

This email is part of a reserved domain. Please enter a different email address.

I have a the annual Microsoft 365 plan on my main, something I don't want to be my main anymore, I'm looking at phasing it out and loosing all the baggage. My initial research seemed I could change the email assigned to my account, but now, it seems like I can't, or I've gone about the wrong way on how to achieve this?

Best Regards,

Tyler

Hello,

You can change the alias for your Microsoft account, but you cannot use an existing outlook or hotmail.com address because they are already their own Microsoft accoutns, and Microsoft doesn't support merging Microsoft accounts.

Microsoft explains it here: https://support.microsoft.com/office/add-or-rem...

Go to Your Info > Sign in preference, Add an alias.

You have two options here:

Create new: this will allow you to use the native domain outlook.com to create a new alias.

Add existing: this will allow you to add a 3rd party email address, such as yahoo, gmail, as long as they are not already associated with another Microsoft account.
