FIX: Restore Office 2021 Lifetime License & Fix AutoSave on Mac
If a recent automatic update locked you out of your lifetime Office 2021 (Home & Student / Home & Business) license on Mac and is demanding a Microsoft 365 subscription, follow this step-by-step guide to reclaim your software.
As an added bonus, this fix also resolves a notorious bug where Microsoft's background updaters constantly broke the AutoSave function due to macOS privacy restrictions. Rolling back restores the old AutoSave experience, because I suspect auto save was tied to auto update by Microsoft.
Note: Either the short or long versions below will fix and will remove MS's app support that keeps bugging you about auto update (and don't fall for the emails if you use an msn mailbox (change your communications preferences, if necessary https://account.microsoft.com/profile/communications ). I used the "cleaner" version 16.113 after I had trouble with 16.114, but either should work.
Short version fix:
🛠️ FIX: Office 2021 Mac "No License Found" & AutoSave Bug
If a recent update locked you out of your lifetime Office 2021 license and broke your AutoSave, Microsoft’s late-October updates are the cause. Follow this quick rollback to fix both issues:
- Wipe Broken Apps: Move Word, Excel, and PowerPoint from your Applications folder to the Trash.
- Empty the Trash (Crucial): Right-click the Trash can and select Empty Trash. (Hold the Option key while clicking if you get error 8072).
- Clear License Cache: Download and run the official Microsoft License Removal Tool to clear the stuck subscription data.
- Install Safe Version (16.113): Download and install the Official Microsoft Office 16.113 Package. Choose Customize during setup to uncheck Teams/OneDrive and keep your current versions.
- Block Future Updates: In Finder, click Go > Go to Folder... and paste /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/. Open the MAU folder and drag Microsoft AutoUpdate to the Trash to freeze your version safely in place.
- Activate: Open Word, click Activate (Key Icon) or "Use Another Account", and sign in with your original purchase email.
This restores your lifetime desktop access and strips away the restrictive updaters that were blocking macOS AutoSave.
Long version:
Step 1: Wipe the Broken Versions
- Open your Mac's Applications folder.
- Drag Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint to the Trash. (Your saved documents will not be deleted).
- CRUCIAL STEP: Right-click your Trash can on the dock and select Empty Trash. If you skip this, the installer will get confused and try to "Upgrade" instead of doing a clean install. (If you get error 8072 regarding PowerPoint, hold down the Option key while right-clicking the Trash can and select Empty Trash to force it).
Step 2: Clear the Stuck License Memory
Microsoft's background files are likely still holding onto the corrupted update data. Clean it out using Microsoft's official utility:
- Download the Official Microsoft License Removal Tool.
- Open and run the .pkg file from your Downloads folder.
- Click through the prompts to completely wipe the local license cache.
Step 3: Install the Safe Version (16.113)
Do not download Office from the Mac App Store or the main Microsoft homepage, as they will force the broken 2026 build onto your system. You need Version 16.113, which predates Microsoft's intentional license blocks.
- Download the Official Microsoft Office 16.113 Installer Package.
- Open the installer.
- On the setup screen, click Customize and uncheck OneNote, OneDrive, and Teams (to preserve your already working versions). Leave Word, Excel, and PowerPoint checked and click Install.
Step 4: Kill Auto-Updates Permanently
Before signing in, you must strip Microsoft of its ability to secretly overwrite your apps again.
- Open Finder and click Go > Go to Folder... in the very top Mac menu bar.
- Paste this exact path and hit enter: /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/
- Look for a folder named MAU or MAU2.0.
- Inside, locate the application named Microsoft AutoUpdate.
- Drag Microsoft AutoUpdate straight to the Trash and empty it.
Step 5: Activate and Enjoy!
- Launch Microsoft Word from your Applications folder.
- Click the Activate (Key Icon) in the bottom left corner (or click "Use Another Account" if a subscription screen pops up).
- Sign in with the exact personal email address you used to buy Office 2021.
Your lifetime license will instantly reactivate, the restriction banners will vanish, and your keyboard and AutoSave functionality will be restored.
