How to fix the problem that I cannot set up or log in to Windows Hello fingerprint

I attempted to register a fingerprint at Windows Hello Setup and left my desk without completing the setup because of phone call from my friend.

When I returned to my desk, I could see my computer was locked.

I entered the PIN and tried to continue my setup.  But, I saw the following errors.

1. Cannot set up Windows Hello fingerprint.

  • When attempting setup, the message “We’ll need to scan your fingerprint a few times to set up Windows Hello.” appears, but it never proceeds to the scan stage. The only available option is the Close button.

2. Cannot log in with Windows Hello fingerprint.

  • If fingerprints were already registered, touching the fingerprint sensor multiple times on the lock screen produces no response.

This problem persists until I restarts the system.

Do you know when this problem is fixed?

This issue is a known limitation in the current version of Windows 11. However, system lockup during setup is not a common occurrence.

At this time, there is no plan to release a fix for this behavior. If you encounter this issue, please restart the system and try the enrollment process again.

I experienced the same issue with fingerprint sign-in. For context, in my case I had already set up the following:

    • Windows Hello PIN
    • Windows Hello Fingerprint
    • Password

I was unable to sign in using my fingerprint, but PIN and password worked fine. I then tried removing the existing fingerprint and setting it up again. However, I encountered the same problem described earlier:

“When attempting setup, the message ‘We’ll need to scan your fingerprint a few times to set up Windows Hello.’ appears, but it never proceeds to the scan stage. The only available option is the Close button.”

After that, I tried several solutions mentioned in this thread, but none of them worked, such as:

    • Restarting the system
    • Restarting Windows Biometric Services via services.msc
    • Uninstalling the biometric devices driver in Device Manager and scanning for hardware changes
    • Deleting the DAT file in the WinBioDatabase folder

Solution for my case: The issue was finally resolved once I deleted my existing Windows Hello PIN and set it up again. Immediately after that, I was able to configure the fingerprint as usual.

Undertake the following: *assuming you do not already have an active 'Hello' biometrics login (If you do, you will need to delete the .dat files and reset your TPM module).

Note:* Type anything contained within square brackets and not the brackets themselves, or {using CTRL+C and CTRL+V} copy and paste the content where the guidance tells you.

    1. Check whether the biometric service is running. Press Win logo + R keys and type [services.msc], scroll for Windows Biometric Service. Once you find it, click it and select properties. If the service is 'disabled', enable the setting to automatic and then click Start. This should now be active.
    2. Check to see if that has resolved the issue. If not, proceed to the next step
    3. Open Windows Explorer, then select Windows, System32, and WinBio Database. Click the folder. If it has any .dat files within - delete them.
    4. In the search box, type [TPM], then click Security Processor Troubleshooting. Click Select, and follow the on-screen instructions. If you get a checkbox list asking for your reason to clear the TPM Security Module, check the top box.
    5. Right-click the Windows logo in the taskbar and select Device Manager.
    6. Locate your biometric device and uninstall the device - do not uninstall the driver.
    7. Now go to your Windows account settings via the settings cog and click sign in options.
    8. If you have a Windows PIN, remove it and do not replace (for the moment)
    9. Reboot your PC
    10. Now you should be able to complete the biometrics setup using a Windows Approved scanner for 'Hello' logins.
    11. Once you have added your fingerprint, you will be prompted to add a PIN. For extra security, be sure to use a combination of letters, (upper and lowercase) numbers and special characters.

I hope this solution has worked for you. If it has not, I suggest you begin with the following, then repeat steps 1 - 11.

In the search box type [CMD], then select run as administrator Copy and paste the following [DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth]

    Once that has completed;

In the same CMD {Black box} type [sfc /scannow]

Remember, you can copy and paste the commands if you wish to be 100% sure.

NOTE: If either DISM.exe or sfc repairs any structure or folders, you MUST reboot before commencing steps 1 - 11.

    Good luck.
