I am logging in to my student account but it keeps asking me for a code from Microsoft authenticator which I know I haven't set up yet. How do I reset this so I can have access to my account. Thanks

Hello @Samuel Affum,

Good day! Thank you for posting your valuable question on Microsoft Q&A forum.

I'm very sorry for the inconvenience you’ve experienced, based on the details you shared. May I ask if you have any alternative method to sign-in besides Authenticator (like SMS, backup email,…)? If yes, please try sign-in using this alternative method.

If you don't have any alternative sig-in method and you're a student, please contact your school's IT admin/Microsoft 365 admin and ask them to revoke your access: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

After you found your school admin, please ask them to follow these steps:

Revoke MFA sessions and require re-register in the Microsoft Entra admin center:

  • Go to Microsoft Entra Admin Center: https://entra.microsoft.com
  • Navigate to Users > All Users.
  • Select your user account.
  • Go to Authentication Methods.
  • Click "Require re-register multifactor authentication".

This will reset your MFA settings. The next time you sign in, you’ll be prompted to set up the Authenticator app again using a QR code.

University account is usually protected by Conditional Access policies or strong MFA enforcement, you can't reset or reconfigure MFA from your end. This is to prevent unauthorized access and ensure compliance with organizational security standards.

Tips to Prevent Losing Access to Your Authenticator App

After you regain access to your Authenticator app: To stay secure and avoid being locked out of your accounts, make sure to set up at least one backup method for multi-factor authentication (MFA):

  • Set up alternative verification methods such as SMS or email
  • Download and securely store your backup codes
  • Use a secondary authenticator app, if supported by your service

Having multiple MFA options ensures you can always regain access, even if your primary method becomes unavailable.
