How do I remove my files from OneDrive, and restore them to my computer?

So far, I've downloaded all my files under the Advanced Settings tab under "Sync & Backup," and, after everything had a solid green circle with a white checkmark in it next to it, I went to the "Manage Backup" button and turned off all the folders there. Turning off all the folders then removed everything from my PC as before, resetting all my progress. I had to go through and do everything again. Thankfully, it didn't take as long the second time around because everything was already backed up to OneDrive. I'm trying to remove everything from OneDrive completely because its incorporation on my computer has messed up the other applications I use with how it's backed up everything.

Yes, it is safe to copy them over.

Don't copy the entire folder, instead, go into the OneDrive\Documents folder and copy the all the content inside into your Cariy\Documents folder.

Your Cariy\Documents folder no longer has a relationship with OneDrive. Basically anything that is not nested in the OneDrive folder has nothing to do with OneDrive.

I believe you have two different Documents folders.

One is located in OneDrive folder, which still syncs to OneDrive.

The other is directly located in your cariy folder. This one doesn't sync to Onedrive.

To clean up your record further, you can right click and delete these records.

Ok, some clean up to do:

Right click on those I marked yellow one at a time > modified, then change the data value.

For Desktop, change to: %USERPROFILE%\Desktop

For My Music, chnage to: %USERPROFILE%\Music

For My Pictures, change to: %USERPROFILE%\Pictures

For My Videos, change to: %USERPROFILE%\Videos

For Personal, change to: %USERPROFILE%\Documents

Restart the computer after that.

You might notice empty folders for those folders above. Don't worry. You would also find their duplicated folders. You need to move the files from the dup into the new empty ones. Then delete the old ones. Otherwise your folders' relationship with OneDrive is not completely gone.

It is not normal for the files to disappear after you turn off the folders after they turn solid green. That is the area that requires troubleshoot, as it shouldn't work that way.

But by leaving those folders on, even after you unlink and got rid of OneDrive, they would still sync, trust me. I've helped many users with this particular issues in this forum.

I am not going to have you install OneDrive back just to turn off those folders. I know you want your files locally. But I want to review the registry in the path I gave you, so I can show you how to make edit to get OneDrive out of your folder path for good, to avoid the sync that many users are facing even after they got rid of OneDrive.

    Hello,

You did exactly what I would suggest to get your files from OneDrive back to local.

There might be one part I didn't quite get from your post - are you saying at one point, OneDrive automatically backs up everything again? Did you do a factory reset? That's the part that is a bit unclear to me. Do you mind clarifying it?
