Onedrive not syncing with phone nor laptop

My OneDrive isn't syncing properly between my iPhone and MacBook, even though it says everything is synced.

I've noticed that many photos from last year are missing in OneDrive, and files on my MacBook are also not being uploaded. The sync status always shows as "Up to date," but it's clearly not syncing everything.

I've already tried:

  • Unlinking and relinking OneDrive
  • Stopping and restarting OneDrive sync
  • Reconnecting my account

Unfortunately, none of these steps have fixed the issue.

Storage isn't the problem, as I've only used 37% of my available OneDrive storage.

Has anyone experienced this issue on an iPhone and MacBook, or knows how to fix it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Hello CC,

From what you descried, I understand that OneDrive shows “Up to date” on your Mac, but some older iPhone photos are still missing from OneDrive, while certain Mac files have not uploaded either.

Please note that “OneDrive is up to date” means the folders currently selected for syncing have finished. On iPhone, Camera Upload is a one-way photo backup rather than a two-way sync, while Mac files must be inside the OneDrive folder or an enabled backup folder.

You can try the following suggestions:

First, sign in to OneDrive on the web and check whether the missing photos and Mac files appear there. Keep a separate copy of important local files before making further changes.

On the iPhone, open OneDrive > Profile > Settings > Camera Upload. Confirm it is enabled for the correct account. Turn on Include Videos, enable Background App Refresh, disable Low Power Mode, and leave OneDrive open on Wi-Fi and charging. If Remaining appears, use Bedtime Backup.

On the Mac, update OneDrive and check that the files are actually saved inside the OneDrive folder. For Desktop/Documents backup, use the standalone OneDrive app and allow Full Disk Access in macOS Privacy settings.

If the issue continues, try resetting OneDrive on the iPhone through Profile > Settings > Account > Reset, then reset OneDrive on the Mac to start a full sync again.

    Note:

    • Resetting OneDrive does not delete files stored in the cloud, but it disconnects existing sync connections and checks all files again. Before resetting, keep a separate copy of any important files that have not yet uploaded.
    • Reset OneDrive on the iPhone refreshes the app’s upload process so remaining iPhone photos can be backed up to OneDrive. It does not download or “sync back” photos from OneDrive to the iPhone.

Please let me know how it goes after trying these steps, and I'll be glad to continue looking into it with you.
