Failed to send Update-Output-Device-Attributes to the registered universal-print printer

I successfully register a printer. Then try to use printer device token as the authorization bearer to post https://print.print.microsoft.com/printers with Update-Output-Device-Attributes operation. But the response code 403 and message is "Required security scope does not exist". The scope I got from user token is below. Do I miss to request other permissions?

https://print.print.microsoft.com/PrinterProperties.ReadWrite https://print.print.microsoft.com/Printers.Create

https://print.print.microsoft.com/Printers.ReadWrite https://print.print.microsoft.com/PrintJob.ReadWrite

If I use user token as the authorization bearer to post https://print.print.microsoft.com/printers with Get-Printer-Attributes operation, I can get the correct ipp response.

Hope anyone can help me to resolve the failed to Update-Output-Device-Attributes operation issue. Moved from Microsoft 365 和 Office | 其他

Hi Chen Jessie,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that you are facing the 403 “Required security scope does not exist” issue. First, please ensure you are not using a user token for this operation. Update-Output-Device-Attributes requires a device access token obtained via the OEM/device flow. If you used a user token, it would work for Get-Printer-Attributes but fail for update operations.

Next, go to https://jwt.ms and paste your token (Disclaimer: This is a third-party link that provides useful information to help you resolve the issue). Please be cautious of advertisements and unsafe links. Check the scp (scope) claim and verify that the following scopes are present:

  • PrinterProperties.ReadWrite
  • Printers.ReadWrite
  • (Optional for full control) Printer.FullControl.All

    Hi @Anonymous ,

    I also try to add one more permission "https://print.print.microsoft.com/Printers.FullControl" to my cloud App. Then test it again. But I still cannot see the scp in printer device token. But I can see it in the user access token.

    "scp": "PrinterProperties.ReadWrite Printers.Create Printers.FullControl Printers.ReadWrite PrintJob.ReadWrite PrintJob.ReadWriteBasic",

    Using this printer device token as the authorization bearer to post "https://print.print.microsoft.com/printers" with Update-Output-Device-Attributes operation still fails. The response code is 403 and message is "Required security scope does not exist". I try both auth code flow and device code flow to get access token. Then use this access token to register printer and get printer device token. Problem is the same. Cannot succeed to do Update-Output-Device-Attributes operation. Always get 403 response code.
