Do I Need Additional User CALs for Windows Server 2019 with Microsoft Entra Connect?

Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding User CALs and our server setup, and I’d appreciate any guidance or advice.

Current Setup:

We have a Windows Server 2012 R2 serving as our Domain Controller. We own 20 User CALs for this server, and there are 20 Active Directory users.

We recently added a Windows Server 2019, which will be used solely to install Microsoft Entra Connect for syncing our AD accounts to Microsoft 365. We currently own 3 User CALs for this server.

Question:

Given that the Windows Server 2019 is only being used for Microsoft Entra Connect and not for any additional user-accessible services, do we need to purchase more User CALs for this server?

Additional Context:

The AD role remains on the Windows Server 2012 R2.

Only administrators will have direct access to the Windows Server 2019 for managing Entra Connect.

    Hello,

Based on the information available, User Client Access Licenses (CALs) are required for users or devices that will directly or indirectly access the Windows Server. In your case, since the Windows Server 2019 is being used to install Microsoft Entra Connect for syncing AD accounts to Microsoft 365, and only administrators will have direct access to the server for managing Entra Connect, you may not need additional User CALs for regular users.

For a definitive answer, it's recommended to consult the licensing terms provided by Microsoft or contact a Microsoft licensing specialist, as licensing can be complex and there may be specific terms or conditions that apply to your situation.

    Best regards,

    Karlie
