Thanks for clarifying, src! and good job catching that it’s the Java Edition launcher. Even though the screenshot shows “Minecraft for Windows” (which is Bedrock), the unified launcher sometimes defaults to that tab, especially if both editions are linked to your account.
Since you're now stuck at “Preparing to download”, here’s a refined set of steps that might help push things forward.
Uninstall the Minecraft Launcher
> Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps, uninstall Minecraft Launcher.
Delete Launcher Cache & Configs
> Press Windows + R, type %AppData%, and press Enter.
> Delete the entire .minecraft folder (if it exists).
> Also delete the Minecraft Launcher folder inside %AppData%\Local\Packages if present.
Reboot Your PC
This clears any lingering background processes or locks on files.
Reinstall from the Official Site
> Instead of the Microsoft Store, download the launcher directly from https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download.
> This version is optimized for Java Edition and avoids some of the Store-related issues.
Note: Open Task Manager, end any processes named MinecraftLauncher.exe or RuntimeBroker.exe before retrying.
Let me know how far you get with these steps.
Best,
Hi src! thanks again for following up, and I think I spotted the issue!
If you tried navigating to C:\Users\yourusername]\AppData\Roaming\.minecraftliterally as it's written, the folder wouldn’t be found because [yourusername] is just a placeholder. You’ll need to replace it with your actual Windows username, for example:
C:\Users\src\AppData\Roaming.minecraft
To find your real username:
Open File Explorer and go to C:\Users\
You should see a folder named after your account, that’s the name to use.
Once you've navigated there, if the .minecraft folder exists, you can delete it and reinstall the Minecraft Launcher via the Xbox app, as described earlier.
Let me know if it shows up now
Best,
