Hi,
I have a relatively new gaming PC purchased from Inet, and I’ve been having this issue since I got it.
Whenever I try to run Microsoft Defender Offline Scan, my PC restarts, but I never see the usual blue Windows Defender Offline scanning screen. Instead, it eventually boots straight back into Windows. The whole process takes around two minutes.
During one attempt, I saw the ASUS logo with the message “Preparing for recovery,” but I didn’t see the actual scan running.
I also have Bitdefender installed, which is my main antivirus. I’ve already performed full scans with Bitdefender, Malwarebytes, and Microsoft Defender, and none of them detected any threats.
I ran this PowerShell command:
Get-MpComputerStatus | Select-Object AMServiceEnabled, AntivirusEnabled, RealTimeProtectionEnabled, AMRunningMode
The results were:
- AMServiceEnabled: True
- AntivirusEnabled: True
- RealTimeProtectionEnabled: False
- AMRunningMode: SxS Passive Mode
I understand that Defender may run in passive mode because Bitdefender is installed.
My questions are:
- Why does Defender Offline restart straight back into Windows without showing the scanning interface?
- Could this be related to Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) or corrupted Windows system files?
- Is this a known issue, and how can I troubleshoot it safely without reinstalling Windows?
Thanks for any help.
