Outlook, classic, sproblems with spam issues etc.

I use MS Outlook Classic. And I have several problems with it.

1.      When I delete messages from the email bin, they often come back after few seconds, and I have to delete them again.

2.      When I get a message and it is treated as spam, and I use “do not block sender” but still the app put them in the spam folder.

3.      When I get messages that are important for me and as I get often, and often but not always read, then suddenly the app treats them as spam when it should have recognized it is not a spam.

4.      I am not surfing dating sites, or pornographic sites, but suddenly I every day get a bunch of sexual messages - often arrive at the same time within 5 minutes every day. I put rules where certain words in the heeding send them to the bin automatically but still get lots of them. Have no idea on how to stop these most unwanted E-mails.

What to do?

    Hi Per Öberg,

I understand how frustrating it is to run into several issues with Outlook, especially when it is both misclassifying legitimate messages and letting a large amount of unwanted mail through. The deleted-message behavior may involve mailbox synchronization, while the other three concern junk-email filtering.

1 - For messages that return after you delete them

Since the messages disappear and then return a few seconds later, I would first determine whether this is specific to classic Outlook (the application) or whether the mailbox itself is restoring/synchronizing them.

    • Sign in to the same mailbox using its webmail interface (Outlook on the web)
    • Test deletion there for a few times to check whether the same message returns.
    • If it does not return in webmail, that points toward an issue with the Outlook desktop.
    • If it also returns in webmail, the issue is not isolated to the classic Outlook application.

2 - About the filtering issue:

Outlook's Junk Email Filter evaluates incoming messages and moves messages it considers suspicious to Junk. For legitimate messages, using “Do not block sender” only removes the sender from the Blocked Senders list, not entirely the mail content. You can try to prevent Outlook from treating their messages as junk with

    • Open Home > Block > Junk E-mail Options > Safe Senders tab
    • Click Add > enter the trusted sender's email address here > select OK.
    • You can also select a legitimate message in Junk > Home > Report > Not Junk.
    • This would be the first thing I would try for problems 2 and 3.

About the unwanted mail, your email address might be exposed to a malicious spamming algorithm. Unfortunately, Outlook cannot prevent them from being delivered. It's like when someone throwing trash at your house, the wall can shield you but to stop getting trashed completely, you need to handle the thrower.

    • From Outlook's side, you can adjust its protection level
    • Select Home > Block > Junk E-mail Options > Options
    • Change the protection level to High if you haven't.

If you do that, it's also worth checking the Junk folder periodically because increasing the protection level also increases the possibility of legitimate email being classified as junk. Continue using Blocked Senders for unwanted senders or domains. Outlook supports blocking individual addresses as well as domains.
