So i've had a problam that started a few weeks ago when booting my computer it gets stuck at the windows logo with spinning dots. After a wile i got it running after restarting a few times and unplugging all usb. Then after it booted everything worked fine for about 3-4 days then the problem was back. This time i just let it be for about 20 minutes and it finally booted but then I couldn't find my harddrive. I have windows on an SSD and another harddrive for storage. Anyway I understood that this had something to do with it so now everytime this happens I just unplugg the harddrive and put it back in and start the computer and it works fine and the problem only happens about 3-4 days apart between that my computer starts with no problem. However today this didnt help as I get stuck on the spinning dots windows logo. So I removed my harddrive completely and tried booting without it and it boots just fine. And also my harddrive and SSD is connected with SATA and not usb might be worth mentioning. I've had this computer for 5 years and never had a problem with it, this problem only started a few weeks ago. Could this be something with a windows update or perhaps my bios? or could it be the cable? I also checked the drive when i was able to boot with it last time and couldnt find any problem with it, 0% fragmented.

I noticed the disk 1 now has Växlingsfil (Shift file, or paging file) in its description after removing the EFI system. I'll add a screenshot of disc management along with diskpart error message.

    Hello again,

So now it's been a few days and the problem occured once again about 3 days ago. So I tried deleting the EFI system of disk 1 and it worked for 3 days and now the problem is back again.

Disk 1 does not have windows on it and have never had windows installed. I'm not using dual boot, no dual boot menu.

Just incase somehow there would be any windows files on disk 1 i decided to clean it with diskpart and i got this message:

    Virtual Disk Service error:

Cleaning is not allowed on the disk that contains the current boot, system, shift file, crash file, or hibernation file volume.

I am so confused about why this is happening. When this happened today and I couldn't boot at first, I waited on windows logo with spinning dots for about 20 minutes and it booted. But no HDD was found. Then I simply turned of my computer, unplugged the power cable and change SATA port, plugged power cable back in and it started fine again and I can use the HDD. It started without problem this morning.

The problem could be the second EFI System partition, on Disk 1.

Is DIsk 1 presently or previously a Windows drive? Are you using it in Dual boot that is controlled by BIOS boot menu, or does it have a WIndows Dual Boot menu screen?

If DIsk 1 is no longer a WIndows installation you use, it should have had the data moved off and been deleted in Disk management, or to even better assure no future problems wiped with Diskpart Clean Command to clear boot code that should not exist on a data drive.

If you had wiped or deleted the E partition first then you can just delete the EFI System off of Disk 1. But first make sure it's not booting the present install by unplugging it's data cable to test starting Windows on Disk0. If it starts on it's own then you can delete the Disk 1 EFI System partition in Disk Management, or if it refuses then use the EISA command here to delete a System partition: https://techjourney.net/delete-and-remove-prote...

If the E partition still has Windows files then you are best off by far moving the data off to wipe the drive with Clean Command and then reformat as a data drive:

To surgically remove the Windows folder requires using Take Ownership shortcut on all parent and child folders, and still leaves code that can interfere:

Based on the answers you post back I may have other suggestions.

Hello Greg, thank you for your reply.

I forgot to mention that I already did a full disk check from Command Prompt and no problem was found. I tried another SATA port now with the same cable and it works again. Here is a screenshot from Disk management

As of now everything works fine, I can see my HDD and use it without any problem. We will see if this happens again in a few days.

HI Anders. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

    1. With both drives plugged in (if possible) please post a screenshot of Disk Management, which I read like a doctor reads X-rays. Follow the steps here so I can see everything we need to advise you: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/foru...
    2. Test the hard drive and SSD with diagnostics:

    https://www.lifewire.com/free-hard-drive-testin...

    https://mashtips.com/ssd-health-test-and-perfor...

HP and Dell have hardware diagnostics triggered by tapping the ESC or F12 keys respectively as you power on.

Best is to use the HDD/SSD manufacturer's own if there is one, otherwise use Seatools bootable long test: http://blog.nowherelan.com/2013/04/04/boot-seat...

Follow this up with a full Disk Check from the Command Prompt in Repair Mode or from bootable media: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/check-hard-dri... if necessary from the Command Prompt at boot: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanc...

    1. If there is no problem found with the HDD, since it has already been identified as the problem blocking boot try changing the cable, try another SATA port.

If those don't help then the problem could be old boot code interfering. Move the data off to wipe the drive with Clean Command to clear code from boot sector and partition table, then reformat and test it again:

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
