Hello,

I am experiencing a problem with Microsoft Whiteboard and would appreciate any guidance.

Environment:

  • Personal Microsoft Account (Outlook.com)
  • Microsoft Whiteboard Web
  • OneDrive Personal

I am using a personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com).

Recently, I received a Whiteboard migration notification. However, the notification only displayed a"Got it" button and did not provide any option to start, manage, or verify the migration.

Current situation:

Existing Whiteboards open normally and remain accessible.

New Whiteboards can be created successfully.

No Whiteboards folder exists in OneDrive.

Newly created Whiteboards do not appear in OneDrive.

Searching OneDrive for Whiteboard files or board names returns no results.

Because of this, I cannot determine whether my boards are being migrated to OneDrive or where they are currently stored.

According to Microsoft documentation, Whiteboards stored in OneDrive should appear in a Whiteboards folder.

My questions are:

How can I verify where my Whiteboards are currently stored?

Is this expected behavior for personal Outlook.com accounts?

Is there any way to check the migration status?

Is there any method to manually trigger or retry the migration?

If this is not expected behavior, how can the issue be escalated to the Microsoft Whiteboard team?

Thank you for any advice or assistance.

Kind regards.Whiteboard

Hello VVera

The absence of a Whiteboards folder in OneDrive is expected because you are using a personal Outlook.com account.

Personal-account Whiteboards are accessed from the Whiteboard board picker and are not saved as .whiteboard files in OneDrive Personal. The OneDrive Whiteboards folder applies to eligible work or school accounts using OneDrive for Business.

The message in your screenshot is also not a migration prompt. It indicates that Whiteboard support for personal Microsoft accounts is ending. According to the notice, you will no longer be able to create or edit these boards after August 22, 2026, and the remaining boards will be deleted after September 5, 2026. The “Got it” button only closes the notification.

There is therefore no migration status or manual OneDrive migration for you to trigger. I recommend exporting every important board as soon as possible:

  1. Open the board.
  2. Select the Settings gear or the … menu.
  3. Choose Export image.
  4. Save the exported file locally and, if desired, upload it to OneDrive for backup.

Please note that an exported image is a visual backup and may not retain individually editable Whiteboard objects. If you need editable boards going forward, you may need to recreate them under an eligible work or school account.

I hope this clarifies why the boards do not appear in OneDrive and helps you preserve the important content before the dates shown in the notification.

Feel free reply back to this post if you have any more questions, I'll be happy to help.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Microsoft Whiteboard team. I have relied on Whiteboard for nearly six years, including during extended periods of remote teaching. The product's simplicity, reliability, and ability to work well even with poor internet connectivity made it an invaluable educational tool. Thank you to everyone who contributed to its development.
