Microsoft 365 subscription is active but Word for Mac cannot be activated (Error 0x0)

I am extremely dissatisfied with the current Microsoft 365 experience.

My Microsoft 365 subscription is active and fully paid. The subscription is correctly recognized by Microsoft and works on my mobile device. However, Word for Mac cannot be activated and displays:

"Unknown error. Error code: 0x0"

System information:

MacBook Retina 12-inch (Early 2015)

macOS Big Sur 11.7.11

Microsoft Word for Mac 16.77 (23091003)

The Microsoft account signs in successfully. Word recognizes the account but shows that the license is not activated.

I have already spent many hours trying to resolve this issue. I have:

  • Reinstalled Office
  • Signed out and signed in again
  • Restarted the Mac
  • Checked my subscription status
  • Removed Microsoft credentials from Keychain
  • Followed Microsoft troubleshooting instructions
  • Verified that the subscription is active

Nothing resolved the issue.

What is especially frustrating is that Microsoft continues to charge for the subscription while the desktop application that I paid for cannot be activated and used.

I purchased Microsoft 365 to use the desktop version of Word on my Mac. Telling customers to use a web version instead is not an acceptable solution when they are paying for a licensed product.

I would like a clear answer from Microsoft:

  1. Is Error 0x0 currently a known issue?
  2. Is Microsoft still supporting activation of Microsoft 365 on macOS Big Sur 11.7.11?
  3. If activation on Big Sur is no longer possible, where is the official announcement stating this?
  4. If this is a Microsoft activation service issue, when will it be fixed?
  5. What specific actions can Microsoft provide to restore activation on my device?

Please do not send generic troubleshooting steps that have already been attempted.

I am requesting a technical explanation and a working solution.

Thank you.

I would also like to clearly state the following.

As a paying customer, I do not believe Microsoft has any moral or customer-service justification for forcing or indirectly pressuring users to purchase newer hardware or upgrade their operating systems in order to access a subscription they are already paying for.

My MacBook was a supported and fully functional device when I purchased and used Microsoft products. The fact that a valid subscription may become unusable due to activation issues creates the impression that customers are being pushed toward hardware and software upgrades rather than being provided with continued access to the service they have already paid for.

If Microsoft has decided to discontinue support for activation on specific macOS versions, this should be communicated clearly, openly, and directly to customers in advance.

Customers should not discover such limitations only after paying for a subscription and then finding that legitimate activation is no longer possible.

I am not requesting new features. I am requesting access to a product and subscription that I have already purchased and continue to pay for.

I find this situation unacceptable.

I am a paying customer with an active Microsoft 365 subscription. Despite having a valid license, I am currently unable to use the desktop product that I paid for because of an activation failure (Error 0x0).

This is not a minor inconvenience. I rely on Microsoft Word for real work, professional communication, document preparation, and time-sensitive tasks.

When a paid productivity service becomes unavailable because of activation issues, Microsoft is preventing customers from performing work they depend on every day.

I should not be forced to lose working time, search through support articles for hours, or repeatedly troubleshoot a licensing problem that is not caused by an expired subscription or an incorrect account.

Furthermore, I strongly object to any situation where customers are effectively pushed toward purchasing newer hardware or changing operating systems in order to access a subscription they are already paying for.

If support for a platform is being limited, Microsoft should communicate this clearly and directly before users discover it through failed activations and lost productivity.

I am requesting a clear technical explanation and a working resolution, not generic troubleshooting instructions.

    Hello

First of all, you are not speaking to Microsoft support here. This is a community forum. I am independent, so I will redirect your complaints to the feedback portal so that those who made decisions on the products can hear your feedback. https://feedbackportal.microsoft.com/

However, I can answer the questions you raised.

    1. Is Error 0x0 currently a known issue? This is not considered an issue - it is due to a recent change on macOS devices below version 12. All Mac devices recently went through a required digital certificate update. This update is necessary for Microsoft office products to stay activated. If a device is still running on the old outdated digital certificate, Office products will not activate. However, macOS 12 and lower version are no longer supported by Apple, hence these devices will not receive the necessary digital certificate update, so it leads to Office products running into this issue.
    2. Is Microsoft still supporting activation of Microsoft 365 on macOS Big Sur 11.7.11? As I explained in the answer above for question 1, the answer is no. Without the updated digital certificate update, Microsoft will not be able to support activation of 365 products on macOS lower than version 12.
    3. If activation on Big Sur is no longer possible, where is the official announcement stating this? This was announced here: https://support.microsoft.com/office/lifecycle/officeinstall/update-m365-office-macos-ios
Microsoft also sent out emails to Apple users who have Office products associated with their accounts. Not sure why you didn't receive it. I know a lot of users do receive them because they have come to the forum here to ask follow up questions because they received the emails.
    4. If this is a Microsoft activation service issue, when will it be fixed? As I explained it in the answer for question 1, this is not simply an activation issue. It is due to the digital certificate update that won't be available for unsupported Mac devices. So it will not be fixed. It is simply because these macOS are no longer supported to receive necessary updates that are required for Office activation.
    5. What specific actions can Microsoft provide to restore activation on my device? Once again, there's no way to restore, hence the options are:
      a. Upgrade your macOS to version 12 at the very least if you can. b. Cancel your subscription, use the web version, or alternative like LibreOffice. c. Use your subscription on supported devices, like other Mac devices running 12 and above, or Windows devices.

Additional concern regarding customer rights and support policy.

I would like Microsoft to address another important concern.

I strongly object to any situation where paying customers are effectively pressured to purchase newer hardware or install newer operating system versions in order to continue using a subscription that they have already purchased and continue to pay for.

From a customer perspective, this situation appears unreasonable.

My Microsoft 365 subscription is active and paid.

My Microsoft account signs in successfully.

    The application is already installed.

However, activation fails with Error 0x0 and the product becomes unusable.

When this happens, customers are often told to:

    • Upgrade macOS
    • Purchase newer hardware
    • Use a different device
    • Use a web version instead of the desktop application

I do not consider these to be acceptable answers to a licensing problem affecting a paid subscription.

I purchased Microsoft 365 with the expectation that a valid subscription would provide access to the product on a supported and functioning device. I am not requesting new features, new functionality, or additional benefits. I am requesting access to the service that I have already paid for.

If Microsoft has changed activation requirements, limited support, or ended compatibility for specific operating system versions, customers deserve a clear, direct, and publicly documented explanation.

Customers should not discover such changes only after their software stops working and their subscription remains active.

I respectfully request a clear official statement regarding:

    1. Whether activation of Microsoft 365 on macOS Big Sur 11.7.11 is still supported.
    2. Whether Error 0x0 is currently a known activation issue.
    3. Whether Microsoft is investigating or resolving this problem.
    4. Whether any activation or compatibility policies have changed.
    5. Why a paid and active subscription is unable to activate on a functioning installation of Microsoft Word for Mac.

At the moment, I have an active subscription but no practical access to the desktop product I am paying for. That situation is unacceptable and requires a clear explanation from Microsoft.
