The video is lagging and freezing on the second monitor.

Good afternoon.

I have two monitors connected in mirroring mode. One monitor is connected via DVI (LG E2241), and the second monitor (Samsung TV) is connected via HDMI. The system is Windows 11 (I had the same issues with Windows 10, but everything worked fine with Windows 7). The processor is AMD 3200G. When playing video in any player on the second monitor, I experience micro-freezing and stuttering. It's as if frames are being dropped. I've tried all the system settings, driver settings, adrenaline software, and TV settings. Nothing helps. The video stutters and freezes in all players on the second monitor. It's especially bad if I pause and then start the video. Both monitors are set to 60Hz and the same resolution. The drivers are up-to-date. I'm out of ideas on how to fix this. Has anyone else encountered something similar?

Hi Alex Smith,

Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that the video on your second monitor is lagging and freezing. Please try making the TV behave like a PC monitor. On the Samsung TV, set the HDMI input label to PC (or rename the source to “PC”) and turn Game Mode = On, Motion/Micro‑judder/Smoothing = Off, Film Mode = Off, Noise Reduction = Off. If available, disable Instant On/Quick Start features. These steps reduce extra processing and enforce RGB 4:4:4 timing.

Also, match the exact refresh timing. In Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, confirm each display’s refresh rate. If one shows 59 Hz and the other 60 Hz, that’s 59.94 vs 60.000. In AMD Adrenalin > Display > Custom Resolutions, add a 60.000 Hz timing for the TV (CVT‑RB) or switch both to 59 Hz (59.94) so they share the same rate. If you can, temporarily switch from Duplicate to Extend (just to test). If the stutter disappears, the issue is timing coupling in mirror mode.

If the issue persists, try turning off Multiplane Overlay (MPO) on Windows. MPO can cause freeze/stutter with some players on multi‑display setups. Disable it to test:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Dwm]
"OverlayTestMode"=dword:00000005

Save as DisableMPO.reg, double‑click to import, reboot, and test. To revert, delete OverlayTestMode or set it to 0.

    In general, I've noticed this pattern: the larger the system size, the more video playback lags in players. It's the system size that affects video quality, not the monitor resolution, but the system size. Additionally1:

    The problem is likely with the "Multiplane Overlay (MPO)" feature. Disabling it improves video quality. I disabled it like this:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Dwm] "OverlayTestMode"=dword:00000005

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers «DWORD (32)-DisableMPO=1

    Additionally2:

    The video still lags, especially noticeably if you pause and then press play. There's no smoothness. One video might play smoothly, but as soon as the second episode starts, it starts lagging. :-(
