Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing a very unusual issue with Excel for the Web, and after several hours of troubleshooting with Microsoft Support, I was advised to post it here.

Problem

Whenever I click on any cell in Excel for the Web, it immediately enters Edit Mode, as if I had double-clicked the cell or pressed the F2 key.

Because of this, I cannot navigate through the worksheet normally.

The problem occurs in every workbook, including newly created ones.

What works normally

  • Microsoft Excel Desktop (Windows application)
  • Google Sheets
  • The exact same Microsoft account on another laptop

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Tworks normally.

    Hello Tiago SILVA

Since the issue affects every workbook but only one laptop, it is more likely related to the browser, an extension, or an input device on that computer rather than the Microsoft account or workbook itself.

Excel normally enters Edit mode after a double-click, selecting the formula bar, or pressing F2.

Please try these tests in order:

    1. Open Excel for the Web in an InPrivate/Incognito window. If it works there, clear the browser’s site data for office.com and microsoft365.com.
    2. Test it in another supported browser on the same laptop, such as Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.
    3. Temporarily disable browser extensions, especially mouse gesture, accessibility, translation, ad-blocking, or keyboard shortcut extensions.
    4. Disconnect any external mouse or keyboard and test with the laptop’s touchpad and built-in keyboard. Also check whether the F2 key appears stuck or whether Windows is registering a single click as a double-click.
    5. In Excel for the Web, select Help > Keyboard Shortcuts and review whether browser shortcut overrides are enabled. Excel for the Web provides a keyboard shortcut setting that can override browser shortcuts.

As a temporary workaround, continue using Open in Desktop App, since Excel Desktop is working normally.

Feel free reply back to this post if you need further assistance, I'll be happy to help.
