Hello Hakenhoar,
Thank you for posting question on Microsoft Windows Forum.
Based on your query of any limitations on services when installing up to two VMs on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard by using Hyper-V. Well! Generally, there are no major technical limitations on the services you can run within those two Windows Server VMs, as the guest OS is a full installation of Windows Server. Nevertheless, there are a few points worth to be mentioned here.
1.Licensing is the primary limit.
- The "two VM" rule is a licensing entitlement . If you need to run a third, fourth, or more Windows Server VMs on the same physical host, you would need to purchase additional Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard licenses or switch to the Datacenter edition.
2.Hyper-V Technical Limitations.
- While less restrictive than licensing, Hyper-V itself imposes maximum resource limits on VMs. For Windows Server 2012 R2:
- Maximum Virtual Processors per VM: 64
- Maximum Memory per VM: 1 TB
- Maximum Virtual Disk (VHDX) size: 64 TB
3.Virtual Hardware/Feature Limitations.
- Some low-level hardware or advanced virtualization features are not fully virtualized.
- Audio: Hyper-V does not virtualize audio hardware directly, but Remote Desktop Connection (RDP) can redirect audio.
- Optical Drives Pass-through: Optical drives are read-only in the guest VM. Burning discs is not supported, though an iSCSI workaround exists.
- Nested Virtualization: You generally cannot run Hyper-V within a Windows Server 2012 R2 guest VM (a feature introduced later in Hyper-V).
