Copilot chat history missing in Word and chat rename option no longer available

Hello,

I am experiencing an issue with Copilot in Microsoft Word. Until recently, the Copilot pane in Word displayed my previous conversations and allowed me to rename individual chats.

The interface has now changed significantly. My previous chats are no longer visible in Word, although they are still available in the Microsoft Copilot app under the same Microsoft account. The option to rename chats in Word has also disappeared.

I have already:

  • updated Microsoft 365,
  • reinstalled Microsoft 365 completely,
  • signed out and signed back in,
  • confirmed that I am using the same Microsoft account.

None of these steps resolved the issue. Because the chats remain available in the Copilot app, they have not been deleted. The problem appears to affect synchronization or the display of chat history specifically in the Copilot pane in Word.

Is this an intentional change to Copilot in Word, a known issue, or an incomplete account migration? Is there any way to restore the previous chat list and the option to rename conversations in Word?

Thank you for your response, but the suggested workaround does not address the actual issue.

The problem is not only that my previous chats are missing from Word. New conversations started in Copilot within Word also do not appear in the Microsoft Copilot app, even though I am signed in with the same Microsoft account.

Therefore, I currently have two separate and unsynchronized chat histories:

    • older conversations are visible in the Copilot app but not in Word;
    • new conversations created in Word are visible only in Word and do not appear in the Copilot app.

This means that I cannot use the Copilot app to rename or manage conversations created in Word because those conversations are not available there at all. Until recently, the chat history was synchronized and I could rename conversations directly in Word.

Could you please confirm whether having separate chat histories in Word and the Copilot app is an intentional change? If not, please advise how this synchronization issue can be escalated and investigated.

    Hello Krzysztof Suchowiecki,

Since your conversations are still visible in the Microsoft Copilot app, they have not been deleted.

Microsoft’s current interface places chat-history management in the Copilot app rather than directly in Word. As a workaround:

    1. Open Microsoft Copilot Chat and sign in with the same Microsoft account.
    2. Select Chats in the left navigation.
    3. Beside a conversation, select More options (…).
    4. Select Rename to change its title.

Reinstalling Microsoft 365 is unlikely to restore the previous Word interface because Copilot features and interface changes are rolled out gradually.

If you would like the history list and rename option restored within Word itself, please submit feedback from Word through Help > Feedback.

I hope this clarifies why the conversations remain available in Copilot but no longer appear the same way in Word.

Feel free reply back to this post if you need further assistance, I'll be happy to help.
