Hello,

I am using Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2021.

Product status:

  • Activated successfully
  • Updated to Version 2605 (Build 16.0.20026.20076)
  • Signed in with Microsoft account
  • OneDrive connected and working
  • Files are stored in OneDrive

Problem:

AutoSave is available and working in Microsoft Word.

However, AutoSave is completely missing in Microsoft Excel.

What has already been verified:

  1. Office is activated.
  2. Microsoft account is signed in.
  3. OneDrive is connected.
  4. Excel files are stored inside OneDrive folders.
  5. New workbooks created directly in OneDrive do not show AutoSave.
  6. Existing workbooks and newly created workbooks behave the same.
  7. Excel version is: Microsoft Excel 2021 MSO Version 2605 Build 16.0.20026.20076 32-bit
  8. Word in the same Office installation displays AutoSave correctly.
  9. Outlook, Word and other applications work normally.
  10. No policy settings were intentionally configured.

Question:

Why is AutoSave available in Word but not available in Excel on the same Office installation and Microsoft account?

Thank you.

    Hello Frank Reiter

Thank you for sharing the detailed information about this issue.

Since you are using Office Professional Plus 2021, please note that AutoSave is mainly available for Microsoft 365 subscribers when files are saved in OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online.

This means that even if Office is activated, OneDrive is connected, and the workbook is saved in OneDrive, Excel may not show the AutoSave toggle under a perpetual Office 2021 license.

However, because Word shows AutoSave while Excel does not, it is also worth checking whether Excel is being affected by a workbook-specific or app-specific condition. Here are some quick checks for you:

    • Make sure the workbook is saved as .xlsx, not .xls.
    • Open the file from Excel > File > Open > OneDrive, instead of opening it from File Explorer or Recent files.
    • Go to File > Options > Save and check whether the AutoSave option is available or disabled.
    • Start Excel normally, not with Run as administrator, as elevated mode can prevent Office from communicating correctly with OneDrive.
    • Temporarily disable Excel add-ins from File > Options > Add-ins to test whether an add-in is blocking AutoSave.

If AutoSave still does not appear in Excel after these checks, it is likely due to license feature availability or an Excel-specific limitation/setting, rather than an activation or OneDrive connection issue.

As a workaround, you can continue using Ctrl + S and make sure AutoRecover is enabled under File > Options > Save to help protect your work.

I hope this helps clarify why AutoSave may appear in Word but not in Excel.

Feel free reply back to this post if you need further assistance, I'll be happy to help

    Thank you for your reply.

I understand that AutoSave is mainly associated with Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

However, in my case AutoSave is available and working correctly in Microsoft Word 2021 using the same Microsoft account and the same OneDrive location.

    Additional information:

    • Word displays the AutoSave toggle normally.
    • Excel does not display the AutoSave toggle at all.
    • Files are stored in OneDrive Personal.
    • Excel files are saved as .xlsx.
    • Excel is not running as administrator.
    • Add-ins were tested and disabled.
    • Office is fully activated.
    • OneDrive synchronization is working correctly.

Because AutoSave works in Word but is completely missing in Excel, this appears to be an Excel-specific issue rather than a licensing limitation.

Additionally, I recently discovered that after an Office repair/update, my Office installation changed from 64-bit to 32-bit. AkrutoSync, which had been working for years, now reports:

"Incompatible version. Please install 32-bit version of AkrutoSync."

Could the change from Office 64-bit to 32-bit be related to the missing AutoSave toggle in Excel?

    Thank you.

    Thank you for your reply.

I agree that the unexpected change from 64-bit Office to 32-bit Office may be the key issue.

Before proceeding with another Office reinstall, could you please advise:

Is there an official Microsoft tool recommended for completely removing the current 32-bit Office installation before reinstalling the 64-bit version?

What is the recommended source for downloading and reinstalling Office Professional Plus 2021 64-bit?

Do you have any recommendations regarding the reinstall procedure to avoid losing activation and existing Outlook profiles?

My Outlook profile, PST file and all accounts have now been successfully restored, so I would like to minimize the risk before performing another Office reinstallation.

    Thank you.

    Hello Xavier,

Thank you for all the advice. Is it worth using MS software to remove the previous version of Office 2021 or other remnants, such as Office 2007?
    Best Regards
    Frank Reiter
