Hi,

After an Explorer crash in Windows 11, icon view settings in desktop folders (e.g., large icons, grouped by name) are not retained. For example, after a few minutes, the view reverts to a list instead of staying as previously set.

I have tried rebuilding the icon cache, running sfc /scannow and DISM, and adjusting the BagMRU Size in the registry, but the issue persists.

This problem also existed in Windows 10, and it seems Microsoft has never provided a permanent fix. This ongoing issue is extremely frustrating.

I would appreciate any guidance or solution to permanently resolve this problem.

Hello! Tomasz, Kimberly here, and I’m eager to jump in and help you fix this.

Since you've tried rebuilding the icon cache, this will prevent crashes in one window from affecting others. so icon cache won't be affected.

Run Explorer Windows in Separate Processes

Open File Explorer → View tab → Options

Go to the View tab and check “Launch folder windows in a separate process”

    Apply changes and restart Explorer

This isolates crashes and can help safeguard your view settings.

Should you have more questions, please let me know.

    Best regards,

    Kimberly
