SharePoint News “Send as email” fails for all dynamic distribution lists

Since September 2, 2026, we can no longer send SharePoint news posts by email to any Exchange Online dynamic distribution list.

What we have tested:

Sending from SharePoint to individual internal mailboxes works.

Sending to static distribution lists fails, including small lists.

Sending to dynamic distribution groups also fails.

SharePoint immediately displays: “Sending email failed.”

Sending the same content manually from Outlook to the same distribution groups works correctly.

This functionality previously worked without issues.

This appears to be specific to SharePoint News “Send as email” when the recipient is a group address. The distribution groups and Exchange mail flow themselves are working.

Is anyone else currently experiencing this? Has Microsoft recently changed group-recipient handling in SharePoint, or could this be a new service regression?

Based on your testing, the issue does not appear to be related to Exchange Online mail flow or the distribution groups themselves, since:

Sending from Outlook to the same groups works successfully.
Individual mailbox recipients continue to work from SharePoint News.
Both static and dynamic distribution groups fail specifically when using SharePoint News → Send as email.

Since the behavior started around September 2, 2026 and affects multiple group types that previously worked, this could indicate a service-side issue or regression within the SharePoint News email delivery functionality rather than a configuration problem in Exchange Online.

I would recommend:

Testing with a newly created distribution group to rule out group-specific configuration issues.
Reviewing whether any recent transport rules, mail flow policies, or recipient restrictions were introduced, although Outlook delivery success suggests this is less likely.

In the meantime, it would be helpful if other tenants could confirm whether they are experiencing the same behavior, as that would further indicate a broader service issue rather than a tenant-specific configuration problem.

Ik denk inderdaad niet dat het aan de exchange ligt maar een bug in Sharepoint. ik heb net een nieuwe dynamic distributielijst gemaakt en krijg dezelfde foutmelding "mail niet verzonden". Het is een zeer beperkte dynamic lijst van 5 mensen.

Om dit verder te laten onderzoeken, raad ik u aan een ondersteuningsticket aan te maken via het Microsoft 365-beheercentrum. De support engineers kunnen de relevante diagnostische gegevens en logs controleren om de oorzaak van de melding ‘E-mail niet verzonden’ verder te onderzoeken.

Vermeld in het ticket ook dat u het probleem met een nieuwe, beperkte dynamische distributielijst hebt gereproduceerd. Voeg indien mogelijk een schermafbeelding van de foutmelding en de stappen waarmee het probleem kan worden gereproduceerd toe.

I have tested the same scenario in my environment, and I am currently unable to reproduce the issue. The "Send as email" feature is working as expected when sending to distribution groups.

To ensure you receive the most effective assistance, I would recommend raising a support ticket through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. The support engineers there have access to backend diagnostic tools and service telemetry that can help investigate whether this is a tenant-specific issue or a service-related problem.

Het probleem lijkt intussen opgelost te zijn. Wij hebben niets gedaan hiervoor alsook onze externe IT firma had nog niets gewijzigd.
