I am unable to verify the custom domain [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed] in Microsoft Entra ID.

The TXT verification record is correctly configured and publicly visible globally:

[Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]

The domain was previously managed through another Microsoft 365 tenant by a former provider ([Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]). I suspect the domain is still internally associated with the previous tenant even though DNS verification is correct.

Current tenant: [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]

Need assistance with domain release, domain takeover, or removing old tenant association.

As your issue description is primarily written in English, I will provide my response in English for your convenience. Please feel free to let me know if you would prefer the information in another language.

    Hi @Kjetil Ferkingstad,

I hope you are doing well.

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing your concern regarding domain release in Microsoft 365 tenant.

Just to gently clarify before we go any further, forum moderators do not have the ability to access, modify, or recover user accounts. Due to security and privacy requirements, issues such as sign in failures, password recovery, and multi factor authentication can only be addressed by Microsoft’s dedicated support teams, who have the appropriate tools and authorization to manage account level settings securely.

In Microsoft 365, a custom domain can only be associated with one tenant at a time. If you see an error stating that the domain is already in use by another organization, it means the domain is still attached to a previous Microsoft 365 tenant, even if you currently own the domain and control its DNS.

In order to maintenance security in your tenant, you cannot release the domain yourself. The only supported path is to contact Data Protection Team from Microsoft Support and request a domain release after ownership verification.

You can reach out to them by creating a support ticket via Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Microsoft also provides customer service phone numbers based on your region. You can find the appropriate contact number here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

When you're reaching out to them, having your order confirmation, purchase email, and any error messages handy will help them assist you faster. Please be ready to share:

    1. DNS ownership verification
    2. Any payment confirmation details
    3. Transaction information such as the final four digits of the card number, the type of card used, the cardholder’s name, and the card’s expiration date
    4. The email address used for purchase

I hope you found the answer helpful, and I would greatly appreciate it if you could mark it as accepted. This helps highlight the solution for others who may be searching for similar information in the community. Your contribution not only supports fellow users in finding the right guidance more quickly, but also helps build a more resourceful and collaborative space for everyone.

Thank you for your kindness and contributions to the forum.
