How long does Windows Server typically take to boot from power-on to the sign-in screen? Is a boot time of 6–7 minutes considered normal? If not, what are the common causes of slow boot times, and which logs or diagnostics can help identify where the delay occurs?

    Hello,

Startup performance depends on the server hardware, storage performance and many other aspects. Common causes include slow disk I/O, storage or pending Windows updates and delays initializing Active Directory or DNS services.

To identify the cause, I suggest checking the following:

    1. Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System: Look for disk, storage, driver, and Service Control Manager warnings or errors around startup, especially Event IDs 7000, 7009, and 7011.
    2. Event Viewer → Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → Diagnostics-Performance → Operational: If available and populated, check Event ID 100 for boot performance information and related events for startup delays.
    3. Event Viewer → Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → GroupPolicy → Operational: Check if Group Policy processing is contributing to the delay.
