A custom domain in my subscription got stuck in Deleting state after
an initial az staticwebapp hostname delete command returned
ERROR: Operation returned an invalid status 'OK'. Since then, every
attempt to re-add the domain (20261122sunwedding.com or its www
subdomain) to any newly created Static Web App in this subscription
consistently fails at the SSL provisioning step with:
"An unknown error has occurred while adding your custom domain.
Please try again later."
Portal-based delete of the failed entries now also fails with
`ResourceOperationFailure: Resource operation completed with terminal
provisioning state 'Failed'`, so I cannot self-resolve.
This matches the known issue documented in:
Per the guidance in those threads, backend intervention by the SWA
team is required to unbind the corrupted custom domain records.
Environment
- Subscription ID:
70742f8b-1190-44e6-ba85-0402b1ec3a0f
- Tenant: Default Directory
- SWA plan: Standard (upgraded during troubleshooting, no change in behavior)
- DNS provider: Azure DNS (zone
20261122sunwedding.com in wedding-rg)
- DNS records verified propagating correctly:
- A
@ → SWA stableInboundIP
- CAA
@ → 0 issue "digicert.com"
- TXT
@ → validation token from SWA

Timeline / What I have already tried
- First registration attempt of
www.20261122sunwedding.com on stapp-wedding-pjw (rg-wedding, East Asia) — Validating → Adding → Failed.
-
az staticwebapp hostname delete — returned ERROR: Operation returned an invalid status 'OK'. Since then the entry has been stuck in Deleting state.
- Created new SWAs in different regions (Central US, then East Asia) with different names (
-v2, -v3) — same "unknown error" at SSL provisioning even when trying just the apex domain.
- Verified TXT record host
@ (per official docs), added CAA record 0 issue "digicert.com" per known issue guidance — still fails at SSL step.
- Migrated DNS to Azure DNS to remove any external DNS variables — still fails.
- Upgraded to Standard SKU — still fails.
- Portal-based delete of the failed entries returns
ResourceOperationFailure.
Every path shows the same failure pattern, indicating the domain
identity is held in a corrupted state at the backend level that
client-side APIs (Portal / CLI / ARM) cannot clear.
Requested Action
Please manually clear the backend bindings for BOTH
20261122sunwedding.com and www.20261122sunwedding.com so the
domain can be re-added to a freshly created Static Web App.
Time Sensitivity
This is for a wedding invitation site with a fixed event date
(November 22, 2026). Any prioritization would be appreciated.
