I am reporting a severe data loss bug regarding the OneDrive sync engine. I am sharing this on the community forum so other users can be aware of this risk, and to request a formal technical explanation from Microsoft engineers.

Environment: Windows 11, Microsoft 365 Personal Issue: Yesterday at exactly 2:29 PM, I saved and closed a highly critical .docx file located in a local OneDrive-synced folder. Today, the file has completely vanished.

Before anyone suggests basic troubleshooting: I have already exhaustively checked the local Recycle Bin, OneDrive Web Recycle Bin, Version History, and conducted a full system search. The file is permanently gone.

This is not a user error, but a critical structural flaw in the sync process, supported by the following technical evidence I discovered:

No Sync Errors: The OneDrive taskbar icon showed a normal sync status.

Broken Directory Mapping: The file briefly appeared in the MS Word "Recent" list today, but clicking it led to a broken OneDrive URL. Word and OneDrive lost the file path entirely.

  1. Leftover Binary Fragments: I inspected the %localappdata%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\OfficeFileCache folder. I found .R , .p and .c4 binary sync fragments generated at exactly 2:29 PM. This proves the file existed and that the sync engine fatally crashed while processing the upload transaction.

AutoRecover (.asd) Failure: Despite this fatal sync crash, Word's AutoRecover system failed to generate any .asd file in the UnsavedFiles directory.

It appears that when Word hands off the save process to OneDrive, a crash in the background upload transaction causes the system to delete the local source file without leaving any backup.

Questions for the community and Microsoft: Has anyone else discovered these .R , .p fragments after a file mysteriously vanished? And can a Microsoft engineer technically explain why the sync engine permanently deletes the local source file when an OfficeFileCache transaction fails?
