Un servizio di Azure usato per raccogliere, analizzare e intervenire su dati di telemetria da ambienti di Azure e locali.
Hello Silvia Frighi,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum.
This is a known and expected behavior with Azure Monitor Agent (AMA) on Linux VMs, especially Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Gen2. The agent does not always appear in the “Extensions + applications” list for manual selection in the portal.
You can still add it, and there are three supported ways to do so.
The reason Azure Monitor Agent doesn’t show up in the extensions list
The reason Azure Monitor Agent doesn’t show up in the extensions list
- AMA is installed automatically when a Data Collection Rule (DCR) is associated
- Microsoft is moving away from manual extension-first installs
- For Linux VMs, the portal UI often hides AzureMonitorLinuxAgent
- This is not related to Gen2 or Ubuntu 20.04 (both are fully supported)

Option 1 — Install via Data Collection Rule (DCR)
This is the preferred Microsoft-supported approach.
Steps
- Go to Azure Monitor → Data collection rules
- Create a new DCR, Platform type: Linux
- Add your Ubuntu 20.04 VM under Resources
- Add data sources (Syslog / Performance counters)
- Select destination (Log Analytics workspace)
- Save
Azure automatically installs the AzureMonitorLinuxAgent extension on the VM

Option 2 — Install manually using Azure CLI (works even if not listed)
az vm extension set \
--resource-group <RG_NAME> \
--vm-name <VM_NAME> \
--name AzureMonitorLinuxAgent \
--publisher Microsoft.Azure.Monitor
This installs the agent even when the portal doesn’t show it
az vm extension show \
--resource-group <RG_NAME> \
--vm-name <VM_NAME> \
--name AzureMonitorLinuxAgent
Option 3 — Enable VM Insights (auto-installs AMA + DCR)
- Go to Azure Monitor → VM insights
- Enable insights for the VM
This installs: Azure Monitor Agent -> Default DCR
Prerequisites to check
Before installing AMA, ensure:
- VM has Azure VM Agent running
- Managed Identity enabled on the VM
- Outbound connectivity to Azure Monitor endpoints
- Sufficient permissions (VM Contributor or higher)

How to confirm AMA is installed on Linux
systemctl status azuremonitoragent
Check extension log
var->log->azure->Microsoft.Azure.Monitor.AzureMonitorLinuxAgent
In Azure:
- VM → Extensions + applications
- Status should show Provisioning succeeded
Reference:
In summary Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Gen2 is supported, AMA not showing in portal is normal DCR-based install is the recommended method CLI install works when UI doesn’t.
