Cannot remove read-only Birthday calendar from Outlook.com account

Hello,

I have an [Outlook.com] (Hotmail) account with a Birthday calendar that contains obsolete birthdays from very old MSN Messenger / Windows Live / Skype contacts.

I have already investigated the issue thoroughly.

  • The contacts no longer exist.
  • Microsoft Graph /me/contacts returns no matching contacts.
  • Microsoft Graph /me/contactFolders is empty.
  • Microsoft Graph reports the Birthday calendar as:
    • canEdit = false
      • isRemovable = true
      • Although the calendar is marked as removable, neither Outlook Web nor Microsoft Graph allows it to be removed.
      • The Birthday calendar still contains these obsolete birthdays.
      • Deleting birthday events through Microsoft Graph returns:
      “Read-only calendars can’t be modified.”
      • Outlook Web provides no option to remove or reset the Birthday calendar.

These birthdays still appear in Outlook Web and also synchronize to Apple Calendar through Exchange.

Could a Microsoft engineer please verify whether this is a backend synchronization issue and, if possible, reset or regenerate the Birthday calendar for my account?

If needed, I can also provide the Microsoft Graph API responses that demonstrate this behavior.

Thank you.

    Hi Jake Sunshine,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on the results you provided, this does appear to be an account-side synchronization issue rather than something that can be corrected through Outlook Web or Microsoft Graph.

The Birthday calendar is a system-generated, read-only calendar connected to contact data. Microsoft’s documented options are to disable or hide it through Calendar > Add calendar > Birthdays. However, if that option is missing or the obsolete events remain after the contacts were deleted, there are no further user-level troubleshooting steps I can recommend for you

Please contact Microsoft Support and provide the Graph responses you collected. Support can investigate the account-side data and determine whether escalation is required.
