Azure Front Door custom domain stuck in Deleting state

The custom domain "xxxxxxx" in Azure Front Door (Standard/Premium)

has been stuck in the "Deleting" provisioning state for more than 20 minutes.

Context:

  • The domain is no longer associated with any route.
  • HTTPS is managed by Azure Front Door (AFD managed certificate).
  • TLS policy was recently changed from TLS 1.2_2023 to TLS 1.2_2022.
  • DNS configuration is correct (Apex A alias to Front Door).
  • Other custom domains (www, staging) are working correctly.

Current status:

  • Provisioning state: Deleting
  • Validation state: Approved
  • Association: None
  • Certificate: AFD managed

Request:

Please clear the backend provisioning lock and complete the deletion

of the custom domain "xxxxxxx".

    If the delete operation for your Azure Front Door Standard profile is stuck in a deleting state and consistently failing due to an internal error, you may want to try the following

    1. Ensure that there are no dependencies or resources associated with the Front Door profile that might be preventing it from being deleted. This includes checking for any endpoints, origins, or custom domains that may still be active.
    2. Sometimes operations that fail in the Azure portal can succeed when executed through CLI or PowerShell. Use Azure CLI to delete the profile using Azure CLI command. Here are the commands you can use:
    az profile delete --resource-group RG name --profile-name profile

    Reference: az afd profile delete

    Review the Activity Log in the Azure portal for any additional error messages or details that might give your insight into why the deletion is failing.
