Teams notifications won't go away chat disabled

Hi everyone.

I'm facing a issue in our organization, the master IT disabled chat but not into the meeting.
So what could happened is, when you are not into the meeting but invited and someone send a message or anything else you will have a forever notification.

As I'm part of the IT I already find some solutions but only if the person know which meeting it was.
For exemple you can go on Teams web and disable the new calendar and when you double click on the specific meeting you can go into chat and see the chat meeting and so read the unread chats.

But for the people who don't know which meeting it is or if it was too long ago it's really not a solution to control all the meeting at once.

Can someone have a idea ?

Thank you for replying this thread and try to help me.

Hi @Auguanno, Dorian,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I’ve carefully reviewed the scenario you described and ran a test in my own environment. You’re absolutely right! When chat is disabled at the tenant level but not within meetings, invited users who don’t join the meeting can still receive persistent “unread” notifications if someone sends a message in the meeting chat.

After researching further, it appears that this is a by-design behavior in Microsoft Teams. The system is designed to ensure that all invited participants, regardless of attendance, are kept in the loop for any meeting-related communication. While this helps maintain transparency and continuity, I understand it can also lead to confusion or clutter, especially in cases like the one you described.

At this time, there is no built-in feature to bulk mark all meeting chats as read or to clear these notifications without manually identifying and opening each meeting chat.

I completely understand your desire for a more efficient way to manage these lingering notifications. It would certainly improve the user experience and reduce unnecessary distractions. However, I hope you understand that as a forum moderator, my role is to assist based on public documentation, product behavior, and community-shared insights. I don’t have the ability to escalate or modify product features directly.

That said, I strongly encourage you to submit this feedback to the Microsoft Teams product team via the Microsoft Teams · Community.
