Excel for the Web lacks a critical capability for advanced users: the ability to define the formula language per user or per workbook, independently of the tenant or SharePoint site regional settings.

Currently, function names are rigidly tied to regional settings, which:

  • degrades usability for technical users working in English,
  • creates unnecessary friction in international collaborative environments,
  • forces users back to Excel Desktop even for minor edits.

Since Excel stores formulas internally in a neutral representation, there is a clear technical basis to allow function names to be authored and displayed in English or the local language, selectable per user or per workbook.

This is a formal request for:

  • a formula language option (EN / local),
  • configurable per workbook or per user,
  • without impacting calculation integrity.

This is not a cosmetic feature. It directly affects productivity and professional adoption of Excel for the Web.Excel for the Web lacks a critical capability for advanced users:

Please note that this is the Spanish (es-es) forum. I kindly recommend posting your question in so that more community members can assist you effectively. If you prefer using English, you are welcome to post in the English forum instead. I sincerely appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Hi @Ceroni, Luis (Santiago)

Thank you for detailing this limitation so clearly. I understand you are formally requesting the ability to define the formula language (English vs. local) per user or per workbook in Excel for the Web, completely independent of tenant or SharePoint regional settings. It is clear that the current rigid tie to regional settings creates unnecessary friction for international teams, disrupts technical workflows, and forces users back to the desktop application for tasks that should be easily handled online.

I sincerely appreciate the time and thought you put into outlining this request. Your technical reasoning regarding Excel's neutral internal representation is spot on, and I completely agree that this is a critical productivity issue for advanced users rather than just a cosmetic preference.

Because this is a community support forum, moderators and contributors like me do not have the permissions or direct channels to implement product changes or forward feature requests to the Microsoft engineering team.

To ensure this excellent feedback gets exactly where it needs to go, I highly recommend submitting this exact request to the official Microsoft Feedback Portal for Excel. The development team actively monitors this portal to gauge user demand, review business impacts, and prioritize future updates.

Once you’ve submitted it, feel free to share the feedback link here, I (and other community members) would be happy to vote for it to help increase its priority.

Thank you again for your valuable contribution and for helping improve Excel for the Web!
