Hello @Fabián Rodriguez
Thank you for contacting us about the VM issue.
Cause :
Azure schedules (Start/Stop, Automation, Logic Apps, or Functions) only power on the VM at the platform level. If the operating system fails to boot, Azure reports the VM as started, but the VM is not usable.
Based on Microsoft documentation, the most common causes are:
- OS boot errors (corrupted boot files, failed updates, disk checks)
- VM extensions failing during startup
- OS disk inconsistencies after previous shutdowns
- VM stuck in boot or restart loop after scheduled start
- Platform host issues that require redeploy
The schedule itself is not the failure point; the issue occurs during the VM boot process after startup.
Steps to perform :
1.Verify VM Power and Boot Status :
Confirm that the VM is actually in a Running state and not stuck in Starting or Failed.
Microsoft recommends verifying VM state first before OS troubleshooting.
2.Review Boot Diagnostics :
Enable and review Boot Diagnostics from the Azure portal.
Boot Diagnostics provides:
- Screenshot of the console during boot
- Serial log output for OS‑level failures
This helps determine whether the OS is loading, stuck, or failing early in boot.
3.Use Redeploy to Address Platform Issues :
If the VM fails only when started via schedule and works intermittently, Microsoft recommends Redeploy:
- Moves the VM to a new Azure host
- Keeps OS disk, data disks, IP addresses
- Fixes host‑level or infrastructure‑side boot issues
Redeploy is a safe first recovery step for scheduled boot failures.

4.Check for OS‑Level Boot Failures :
If Boot Diagnostics shows OS errors (blue screen, kernel panic, disk errors):
- Windows: Review boot error type (update failure, disk check, BitLocker, BCD issues)
- Linux: Review serial logs for kernel panic or mount failures
Microsoft provides OS‑specific remediation based on the boot error detected.
5.Repair OS Disk if Required :
If the VM fails consistently after scheduled start:
- Stop the VM
- Detach the OS disk
- Attach it to a recovery VM
- Repair boot files or OS configuration
- Reattach and start the VM
This is the recommended recovery path for corrupted boot scenarios.
Thanks,
Manish Deshpande.
