I’m considering purchasing 500 DWU of reserved capacity for 3 years with a monthly billing frequency. My question is: would I be able to cancel this 500-DWU reservation at any moment without receiving any penalty?

My understanding is that as long as the total amount of all reservations does not exceed USD 50,000 per year, there shouldn’t be any cancellation penalty. Each 100 DWU reserved for 3 years costs approximately USD 307 per month, which means that 500 DWU would cost about USD 18.396 per year. Mathematically this seems to fall within the no-penalty threshold.

However, I’m not fully confident whether I might be missing something or if my interpretation of the rules is correct. Could someone confirm whether this understanding is accurate?

Is it based on the projected annual reservation cost (18,396 USD per year in my case), or on the total value of the unused commitment being canceled? For example, if I purchased the 3-year plan and canceled it immediately, the unused commitment would be 18,396 × 3 = 55,188 USD, which would exceed the cancellation limit.

Thanks for your follow-up! The $50,000 USD limit applies to the unused portion of any canceled reservation within a rolling 12-month period. So, if you cancel a 3-year reservation immediately, the unused commitment ($18,396 × 3 = $55,188) would exceed that limit.

If you plan to cancel large reservations, just make sure the unused commitment you're asking to refund doesn’t go over the $50,000 threshold. If it does the cancellation can’t go through for that amount until it’s under the limit.

If I were to pay for 4 out of the 36 months in the 3-year term, would the reservation then be cancellable? The total 3-year cost is USD 55,188, so the monthly equivalent is 55,188 / 36 = 1,533. After 4 months, the paid amount would be 1,533 × 4 = 6,132. Subtracting that from the total leaves USD 49,056. Is this how the remaining unused commitment would be calculated?

Yes, you can cancel your 3-year reserved DWU capacity as long as the unused commitment to be refunded remaining value does not exceed $50,000 in the last 12 months. In your example, after 4 months you’d have $49,056 unused well below the cap so cancellation and refund are allowed, with no penalty. Always check your total unused refund amount if canceling multiple reservations in a year.
