Excuse my ignorance, but I want to exit my Windows 11 Insider Dev version and when updating it asks me to delete everything and instead I want to keep my programs and files, I ask if I can make changes to the registry to allow me to do what I want.

Thanks for the reply, I see that I have to delete everything and reinstall, it's going to be a lot of work and I think for now I'll continue with this channel.

    Hola.

    Saludos.

    Dear Salvador Solé
Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum! I'm Haien from Microsoft Q&A.

I understand you're looking to transition your Windows 11 system from the Insider Dev Channel to the standard, official public release while keeping your applications and personal files. The good news is you can exit the Dev Channel and upgrade to regular Windows 11 while keeping everything intact, as long as you're on a build that's aligned with the current stable release (like 24H2 as of now).

    Here's a quick, step-by-step guide for Windows 11:

    • Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog. Type regedit and press Enter > Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost

    • Right-click on the WindowsSelfHost folder (key) on the left panel > Select Delete. Confirm the deletion > Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer
    • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > select "Stop getting preview builds." Confirm and follow the prompts.
    • Head back to Settings > Windows Update and click "Check for updates." Your device should now pull the latest stable Windows 11 build (e.g., version 24H2). Install it—this keeps your files, apps, and settings.

If it still asks to delete everything, we can use the Installation Assistant for a seamless in-place upgrade:

    • Download the Windows 11 Installation Assistant from the official Microsoft site: Download Windows 11.
    • Run it, choose "Upgrade this PC now," and select "Keep personal files and apps." It'll handle the switch without data loss.

Warnings: Always back up important files to an external drive or OneDrive before major updates, just in case. Although the in-place repair is designed to keep files and apps, moving from an unstable Dev build is inherently risky. Before proceeding with the Registry Edit or In-Place Upgrade, you must back up all critical personal files to an external drive or cloud service (like OneDrive)
