Hi Carlos Montes,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A and thank you for posting your query here!
According to Microsoft's official guidance for upgrading Basic SKU public IPs and Basic Load Balancers to Standard SKUs, the core issue is that Azure load balancers require at least one front-end IP configuration at all times, so you cannot delete or disassociate the only front-end IP directly in the portal.
Important note on SKU compatibility:
Azure does not allow mixing SKUs between public IPs and load balancers. A Basic Load Balancer must use Basic SKU public IPs, and a Standard Load Balancer must use Standard SKU public IPs. You cannot attach a Standard SKU public IP to a Basic Load Balancer or vice versa.
Step-by-step solution to disassociate Basic Public IP from a Basic Load Balancer:
- Create a Public IP address if you need a temporary IP to maintain SKU consistency during migration. Avoid creating or attaching a Standard SKU public IP to a Basic Load Balancer directly.
- Add a new Front-end IP configuration to the Load Balancer using this new Public IP.
- Update load balancing and NAT rules to use the new Front-end IP instead of the existing Basic SKU IP.
- After confirming traffic is flowing correctly via the new IP, you can safely delete or disassociate the original Basic SKU front-end IP configuration.
- Use Microsoft’s official migration script or manual upgrade process to upgrade both the load balancer and the disassociated Basic SKU public IP(s) to Standard SKU in a coordinated manner following official guidance.
- Upgrade any related backend resource IPs accordingly, such as virtual machines or scale sets.
- Once fully migrated and verified, delete the old Basic SKU Public IP resources that are no longer used.
Note:
- SKU matching ensures proper operation and compatibility throughout the upgrade process.
- Microsoft's migration script is the recommended approach to safely upgrade the load balancer and associated public IPs simultaneously.
- This process minimizes downtime and avoids SKU mismatch errors.
