Hello,
Since updating Microsoft Word for iPad to version 2.112.1, the application crashes every time I open certain DOCX files.
Environment
- Device: iPad Air (5th generation)
- iPadOS: Latest available version
- Microsoft Word: 2.112.1
Issue
Several DOCX documents that previously opened without any issues now consistently cause Word to crash.
When I tap one of the affected files, Word freezes for approximately 1–2 seconds and then closes without displaying any error message.
The issue is 100% reproducible with the same documents.
Troubleshooting already performed
I have already tried all of the following without success:
- Updated iPadOS to the latest version.
- Reinstalled Microsoft Word.
- Restarted the iPad.
- Saved the affected documents with different names.
- Created copies of the documents.
- The problem still occurs.
Additional information
- The affected documents are stored locally on the iPad (not in OneDrive or iCloud).
- The same documents open correctly in Apple Pages on the same iPad.
- The same documents also open correctly in Microsoft Word for Windows.
- Other DOCX files open normally in Word for iPad.
- Most of the affected documents contain tables.
Additional testing
I compared one affected document with another very similar document that opens correctly.
Both documents:
- have a very similar layout,
- use tables with the same overall structure,
- were created in the same way.
However, only one of them causes Word for iPad to crash.
This suggests that the issue is not simply caused by the presence of tables, but by the way Word for iPad version 2.112.1 processes certain DOCX files.
Conclusion
Based on all the tests performed, this appears to be a regression introduced in Word for iPad version 2.112.1, rather than a problem with the documents themselves.
I can provide:
- an affected document that always reproduces the crash,
- another very similar document that opens correctly,
if this helps reproduce and investigate the issue.
Thank you.
