Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.
Based on the description you posted, you have an issue with Surface laptop 5, wherein the battery on the Surface device will last 4-5 hours. This may be caused by battery setting on the device need to check, battery driver is corrupted or the device itself.
Let’s work together in finding the best solution to this issue. We will ask a few questions to further isolate the issue.
- Is this happening since you go the device?
- Are you use your device for business purposes or personal used?
- Have you done any basic troubleshooting before you contact Microsoft.
- Did you try to use the smart charging on your Surface device?
We will do some basic troubleshooting to further fix the issue.
- Based on the advertised amount it lasts up to 17hours of typical device usage. What we are going to do is download and run the Surface diagnostic toolkit on your Surface device. (This toolkit will help us fix any hidden issue on the Surface device) Please click this link: Solucionar problemas comunes de Surface con la aplicación Surface y el Kit de herramientas de diagnóstico de Surface - Soporte técnico de Microsoft
- We also check if the smart charging on your Surface is on. (Smart charging is a feature that helps protect your Surface battery against conditions that may accelerate battery deterioration) To open or setup smart charging on Surface, you need to use the Surface app.
Select Start and open the Surface app.
When the app is open, select Smart charging.
You can see the status of your battery charge and whether smart charging is on or off.
You can also manually pause smart charging by selecting Charge to 100%. This will allow your device to charge to full capacity until smart charging turns on again based on your battery use patterns.
3. Next, we will check the Windows update Go to**Settings** > **Update & Security** > **Windows Updates** > **Check for updates**.
4. Next, we will check the power mode slider. Disconnect the Surface from the power supply. open **Settings**>**System**>**Power & battery** and ensure the **Power mode** is set to **Recommended**.
5. Next, we will check the Battery saver settings. **Settings**>**System**>**Power and battery** Check that **Turn battery saver on automatically** is enabled and that it is set to at least 20%. (Check that **Lower screen brightness while in battery saver** is also enabled.)
6. We will be going to run the power troubleshooter, to open from the Search box, enter "troubleshoot power" and then open.
7. Next, we will be going to download the driver pack on your Surface device. 8. After you download the driver pack and install, please restart the Surface to apply changes. Observe if the issue fix.
9. Just in case the issue still happens for short battery life. The next step is to download and install the USB recovery image for your Surface to clear out that this is not a software issue on the Surface device.
Here are the instructions and USB needed on how to download and reset your Surface device using the USB recovery image.
REQUIREMENTS:
USB flash drive (DO NOT use external hard drive). Minimum storage capacity needed base on your Surface type: <Surface RT and Surface 2 – at least 8 GB in size or Surface Pro models, Surface 3 and latest - at least 16 GB depending on customer’s Surface device>
NOTE: Creating a recovery drive will erase all existing files that are stored on the USB flash drive. Make sure to transfer any important data on your USB flash drive to another storage devce before you proceed.

Download USB Recovery Image - http://aka.ms/sri
Here's the link on how to use the recovery image.
Creating and using a USB recovery drive for Surface (microsoft.com)
Note:
After downloading complete> create a folder on the desktop and rename recovery and then extract the recovery image on the folder we create on your desktop. Once its complete. Do not copy the folder to the USB directly but, you need to open that folder and then select all the files on that folder and copy and directly paste to your USB flash drive. Then once is done copy, remove the USB and connect the USB to the Surface and follow the steps I send to your email.
When you're ready, here's how to reset your Surface:
- Make sure your Surface is turned off and plugged in, and then insert the USB recovery drive into the USB port.
- Press and hold the volume-down button while you press and release the power button.
- When the Microsoft or Surface logo appears, release the volume-down button.
- When prompted, select the language and keyboard layout you want.
- Select Troubleshoot, and then select Recover from a drive. If prompted for a recovery key, select Skip this drive at the bottom of the screen.
- Be sure to select the Troubleshoot option on this screen. Don’t select the Use a device option. If you select the Use a device option, your Surface will reboot from the USB recovery drive again and the reset process will start over.
- Choose either just remove my files or fully clean the drive.
- The option to clean the drive is more secure but takes much longer. For example, if you’re recycling your Surface, you should clean the drive. If you’re keeping your Surface, you just need to remove your files.
9.Select Recover.
Surface restarts and displays the Surface logo while the reset process continues. This can take several minutes.
Please tell me how it goes.
Kind regards,
Christopher.
