365 personal free trial on new laptop issue

Recently bought a new HP laptop that came with a free 1 year trial of Microsoft 365 Personal. First time using the laptop I would get a notification/pop-up saying to activate the free trial. Since my subscription to 365 I had through Dell was still active, it said I had to let my active subscription expire before activating my new free trial subscription. My subscription through Dell expired yesterday, so my account obviously shows as inactive. But today my new laptop doesn't give me the option to activate the free trial when I get into my Microsoft account. It just says I need to renew and gives me pay options. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi,

Go to the Microsoft Store > Library > click the "Sort and filter" icon and uncheck the option "Show only installed apps."

    User's image

Then, select "Included with device" and check if Microsoft 365 is there for you to activate.

Please note that there is a 180-day window to redeem this Office offer; if you haven't redeemed it within that period, you have likely lost the chance to use it.

Activate the laptop’s bundled offer from Word or Excel on the new HP—not from the renewal page—because a genuine one-year computer offer is stored as a digital license on that device and is added to your Microsoft account when you sign in.^1^

    Activate the bundled offer

    1. On the new HP laptop, open Word or Excel from the Start menu.
    2. Look for the activation screen describing an Office purchase or subscription included with the device.
    3. Select Activate or Sign in.
    4. Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account whose Dell subscription has just expired.
    5. Complete the prompts. The expected result is that the one-year Microsoft 365 Personal offer is added to that account; no printed key is required for a digital offer.
    6. Close and reopen the Office app, then check File → Account. Under Product Information, it should show an activated Microsoft 365 subscription.

A computer-bundled offer may be redeemed after the existing subscription expires, so waiting was a supported option.^2^

If Word or Excel only offers paid renewal

Check File → Account → Product Information:

    • If it shows an included one-year subscription or an activation prompt, use Activate/Sign in there.
    • If it shows only a trial or an unlicensed product, the installed software alone does not prove that a one-year subscription was included. Microsoft distinguishes an ordinary preinstalled trial from a purchased one-year offer.^1^
    • Review the HP order confirmation, receipt, product listing, or packaging for wording such as “Microsoft 365 Personal included for one year.” If confirmed, contact HP because the OEM digital entitlement may not have been provisioned correctly.

If HP provided a 25-character product key instead of a digital entitlement, redeem it at microsoft365.com/setup, signing in with the intended Microsoft account. Successful redemption should display the new expiration date.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "How to renew your Microsoft 365 subscription")

Since the Dell subscription expired only yesterday

If the Office activation screen still says the previous subscription must expire, allow 24–48 hours for the account status to finish processing, then retry activation from Word or Excel. A closely matching Microsoft Q&A case reports this short processing period immediately after expiration.^4^

If the offer still does not appear after that:

    1. Check Microsoft account → Services & subscriptions using every personal Microsoft account that may have been used during the laptop’s initial setup.
    2. If the offer appears under another account, that is the account to use in Office; product redemption is tied to the account used during activation.^5^
    3. If it appears under no account but HP confirms the one-year offer, contact HP first for entitlement provisioning. If HP confirms that the entitlement is correctly assigned, use Contact Microsoft Support from the Microsoft subscription support flow and provide the receipt, laptop serial number, and screenshots of File → Account and Services & subscriptions.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "How to renew your Microsoft 365 subscription")

Do not purchase a renewal until HP or Microsoft verifies whether the included entitlement exists, since buying a new subscription would not recover a missing OEM offer.
