My Powerpoint app does not have a record button to record audio or video to place into the presentation.

Thanks,

    Dear @Candice Smitherman

I’d first check the Slide Show tab in the PowerPoint desktop app. Depending on your version, the recording option may be called Record Slide Show even if there’s no separate Record tab. This is the option to use if you want to narrate your slides or include webcam video where supported. Please refer to this document: Record a slide show with narration and slide timings

If you only want to record an audio clip for one slide, select that slide and try Insert > Audio > Record Audio. If you already have a recording, you can insert the saved audio or video file instead. Please refer to this: Add or delete audio in your PowerPoint presentation

Recording features vary by platform, so that will help me point you to the right option.

Enable the hidden Recording tab in PowerPoint by opening File → Options → Customize Ribbon, selecting Recording in the right-hand list, and clicking OK.^1^

    Record the presentation

    After enabling the tab:

    1. Open Recording and select Record, or open Slide Show → Record.
    2. Choose to record from the current slide or the beginning.
    3. In the recording window, turn on the microphone and camera using their controls.
    4. Start recording. PowerPoint embeds the narration and video into the individual slides.^1^

In newer Microsoft 365 versions, the control may instead appear:

    • As Record in the top app bar beside Share and Present in Teams
    • On the Record ribbon tab
    • As Slide Show → Record

    Microsoft documents all three locations.^2^

The newer recording experience was rolled out progressively, and availability on an education-managed installation can depend on when the institution's administrator distributes Microsoft 365 features.^1^

If only audio on one slide is needed

The full presentation recorder is unnecessary for a single audio clip:

    1. Select the destination slide.
    2. Select Insert → Audio → Record Audio.
    3. Enter a name and select Record.
    4. Select Stop, preview with Play, and then select OK.

The microphone must be enabled on the Windows device.^3^

If none of these commands exists

Check File → Account → About PowerPoint to identify the exact product and version. Microsoft’s documented slide-show recording procedure applies to PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 and desktop PowerPoint 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024.^1^

If one of those supported desktop editions is installed but the commands remain absent after customizing the ribbon:

    1. Close and reopen PowerPoint.
    2. Install the Office updates made available by the school.
    3. If the installation still lacks the controls, ask the institution’s Microsoft 365 administrator whether updates or new Office features are centrally delayed.
    4. As a final repair path, use Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Microsoft 365 → Modify → Online Repair. Online Repair is the more thorough Office repair option, but it may require administrator approval on a managed school computer.^4^
