Sora-2 deployment blocks on "ServiceModelDeprecated" error in Azure AI Foundry / OpenAI

Hi everyone,

I am trying to complete the official Microsoft Learn video generation labs (such as AI-103), but I am completely blocked when trying to deploy the Sora-2 model.

I have systematically tested all workarounds (deploying via Azure AI Foundry projects, deploying directly through the native Azure OpenAI Service resource in the Azure Portal, and changing regions to Sweden Central and East US 2). Nothing works.

Depending on the configuration I use, I get the following explicit deprecation errors:

  • With Default Settings: ServiceModelDeprecated: The model 'Format:OpenAI,Name:sora-2,Version:2025-10-06' has been deprecated since 07/15/2026 00:00:00.
  • With Custom Settings: Failed to create deployment. The model 'Format:OpenAI,Name:sora-2,Version:2025-12-08' has been deprecated since 11/02/2026 00:00:00.

The Problem: The official MS Learn course material and lab instructions still enforce the deployment of these specific Sora-2 versions. However, the Azure backend now strictly rejects them because their deprecation dates have passed.

Since the portal and the automated lab scripts are hardcoded to point to these deprecated versions (2025-10-06 and 2025-12-08), we cannot proceed with the training.

Is there a newer, active version of Sora-2 available that we can manually reference? Or could the Microsoft Learn team update the lab dependencies to reflect the current 2026 model lifecycle?

Thank you for your help!

Hi @Zine-eddine FODIL

Welcome to the Microsoft Azure QnA Community.

Your understanding is right: there is no newer sora-2 version to move to.

The retirement schedule shows two sora-2 entries. The 2025-10-06 version was retired and replaced by the 2025-12-08 version. That 2025-12-08 version has now also been retired, and there is no replacement listed, which is why you cannot find a successor model.

This also explains the confusing part. The region availability page still shows sora-2 (2025-12-08) as available in East US 2 and Sweden Central, so the availability page and the deployment service currently disagree. The portal still lets you select the model even though deployment now fails. Checking availability by region will keep sending you back to the same error.

The lab is the real issue, because it still asks for these retired versions. It is worth reporting through the feedback link at the bottom of the Learn module for the content owners to look at.

If Microsoft ships a replacement, it will appear in the retirement schedule:
