Hello,

I had a paper that did not properly sync in one drive, which caused me to lose a 5 page paper. I am trying to see if Microsoft somehow has a version of the file after the last time stamp that my local side client saved. I don't have time to rewrite the paper, is there any recovery that can be done to help, or is it gone forever? Thanks.

    Hello Jailen R. Horn,

Thank you for providing the session number.

When you mentioned that the AI guidance did not help, could you please confirm whether you checked both OneDrive Version History and Word > File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents, but no version containing the missing five pages was available?

As an additional check, please open Word and go to File > Home > Recent, as shown in the screenshot. Review the listed documents, their storage locations, and their modified dates to see whether another copy of the paper was saved under a different name or in a different location. You can also select More documents or use the search box to look for other copies.

Please note that Recent does not contain backup versions. It only lists documents that were opened recently, but it may help locate another copy saved locally or under a different OneDrive location.

Please also check the AutoRecover folder shown under: Word > File > Options > Save > AutoRecover file location

    User's image

Copy the displayed folder path and open it in File Explorer or click "Browse". Review any files with a date and time close to your last editing session. If you find a possible recovery file, open it and immediately use Save As to save it under a different name before making any changes. Microsoft confirms that Word may retain recovery files when the application closes unexpectedly.

If none of these locations contains the missing content, please contact your school’s IT administrator and ask whether they can investigate further or open a support request with Microsoft using the session number you provided.

The AI guidance already covers the standard recovery options available through Word and OneDrive. If the missing changes were never successfully synchronized to OneDrive and no local or AutoRecover copy remains on the computer, there may unfortunately be no stored version available to restore.

Please let me know what you find after checking these locations.

    Best regards,
