A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
Common causes are:
- The workbook is opened from a shared location and another person already has it open in the desktop version of Office. In that case, the file can be viewed but not edited until the other person closes it. If changes are needed immediately, use File > Save As to create a copy and edit that copy.
- The file is effectively read-only because edit permissions are missing. Excel needs Read, Write, Modify, and Delete permission on the folder where the file is being saved. If those permissions are missing, save can fail or stay unavailable.
- Excel on the Mac may not be properly activated or signed in. In Mac scenarios where Save and Save As are greyed out, accepted resolutions include:
- In Excel, use Excel > Sign Out.
- Restart the Mac.
- Open Excel again and sign in with the account that owns the Microsoft 365 subscription or Office license.
- Then test File > Save and File > Save As.
- If the file is locked for co-authoring, unsupported workbook features can cause the lock. On Mac, possible fixes include:
- Remove workbook protection if enabled from the Review tab.
- Remove restricted access from File > Restrict Permissions > No Restrictions.
- Turn off Refresh data when opening file on tables or PivotTables.
- Disable Excel add-ins from Tools > Excel Add-ins.
- A third-party add-in can interfere with saving. Test Excel in Safe mode:
- Exit Excel.
- Start Excel while holding Ctrl.
- When prompted to start in safe mode, select Yes.
- Open a workbook and test saving. If saving works in Safe mode, an add-in or startup file is likely the cause.
- Other save blockers include:
- Not enough free disk space
- Antivirus software interrupting the save process
- Saving to an external or network drive with a failed connection
- A file path longer than 218 characters
A practical order to try on the Mac:
- Check whether the file is opened from a shared location and locked by another user. If so, use File > Save As to make a copy.
- Sign out of Excel, restart the Mac, and sign back in.
- Save the workbook to a different local folder on the Mac to rule out permissions, network drive, or external drive issues.
- Disable Excel add-ins and test again.
- If the workbook is shared or co-authored, remove unsupported features listed above.
