OneNote can't connect to the server. Sync will resume once we connect. You don't need to take any action. (Error code: 0x3 6fqa8)

For a OneNote sync error on Windows, use this order:

    1. Install any available Office updates.
      • In OneNote, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
    2. Make sure automatic sync is enabled.
      • Go to File > Options > Sync.
      • Turn on Sync notebooks automatically.
    3. Try a manual sync.
      • Go to File > Info > View Sync Status.
      • Select Sync All, or Sync Now for the affected notebook.
      • In the same dialog, check whether OneNote shows an error message or code for that notebook.
    4. Test whether the notebook opens in OneNote for the web.
      • In OneNote desktop, go to File.
      • On Info, right-click the notebook URL under the notebook name and select Copy.
      • Paste it into a browser and open it in OneNote for the web.
      • If it opens there, the issue is likely with the desktop app connection rather than the server.
    5. If the notebook opens in the browser, reset the notebook connection.
      • Warning: before closing a notebook that is not fully synced, copy and back up any recent unsynced notes from the device first to avoid data loss.
      • In OneNote desktop, go to File > Info.
      • Next to the affected notebook, select Settings > Close.
      • Open the notebook again from OneNote for the web by selecting Open in Desktop App.
    6. If the error is effectively a server/authentication issue, try these fixes.
      • Sign out of OneNote and sign in again.
      • Close and re-open the notebook.
      • Confirm access to the notebook in OneNote for the web, SharePoint, or SharePoint Online.
    7. Check whether the storage service has an issue.
      • If the notebook is stored on OneDrive, check the Microsoft 365 service health page.
      • If it is stored on SharePoint, contact the administrator to troubleshoot the server-side issue.

If the notebook syncs in the browser but not in the app, the most useful next step is closing and reopening that notebook from OneNote for the web. If it does not open in the browser either, the problem is more likely with the service or access to the notebook.

    Hi @Esther Grubb

Have you tried the troubleshooting steps suggested in the AI-generated Q&A yet? It provides separate instructions for OneNote on Windows and OneNote for the web. You can try those steps first to see whether they help resolve the issue.

For more details, please refer to: Fix issues when you can't sync OneNote

You can also try the following as additional troubleshooting steps:

    For OneNote for the web

    • Refresh the page, then sign out of your Microsoft account and sign back in.
    • Open the affected notebook directly from OneDrive or SharePoint.
    • If the issue continues, try using an InPrivate or Incognito window, clear your browser’s cache and cookies, or test the notebook in another browser, such as Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.

For the OneNote desktop application on Windows

    • Go to File > Account, sign out, and close OneNote and all other Office applications completely.
    • Reopen OneNote and sign back in with the account that owns or has access to the notebook.
    • Then go to File > Info > View Sync Status and select Sync Now next to the affected notebook.

Feel free to follow all the steps above, and if you have any questions or need further assistance, please reply to this post and I will be happy to help.
