I have a subscription to Microsoft 365 Personal Classic. After installation I am only getting Word for the Web, not Desktop Word. How do I get Desktop Word?

Check Services & subscriptions with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription; desktop Word is available only if that account shows the active product and an Install Microsoft 365 or Install apps option.

Check whether Word is already installed

Since you already ran an installation:

    1. Select Start in Windows.
    2. Type Word.
    3. If Microsoft Word appears as an application, open it directly rather than selecting Word from a browser or Microsoft 365 webpage.
    4. If prompted, sign in using the same Microsoft account that owns the subscription and accept the license agreement to activate Word.^1^

Verify the subscription and get the desktop installer

    1. Open https://account.microsoft.com/services.
    2. Sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase or activate Microsoft 365 Personal Classic.
    3. Confirm the exact subscription name and that it is active.
    4. Look for Install Microsoft 365, Install apps, or wording that says you can install premium Microsoft 365 apps.
    5. If present, select it, choose the language/version if prompted, and select Install.
    6. Open the downloaded OfficeSetup.exe, approve the Windows prompt, and wait for “You’re all set! Office is now installed.”
    7. Open Word from Start, then activate it with that same Microsoft account.^2^

Standard Microsoft 365 Personal includes both web and desktop apps, whereas an account showing Free has access only to the web apps.^3^

If there is no Install option

Microsoft’s current consumer documentation does not clearly identify a plan named exactly Microsoft 365 Personal Classic, so do not purchase another plan until its entitlement is confirmed.

    • Ensure the account page shows the subscription you purchased, not a Free badge.
    • If the subscription appears under another Microsoft account, sign out and use that account.
    • If the correct active subscription is shown but there is no installation option, open the installation page’s Need help? section and run the Microsoft 365 setup troubleshooter.^1^
    • If the account page lists “Personal Classic” but does not state that desktop apps are included, contact Microsoft account and billing support to confirm that specific subscription’s benefits.
