Teams Documents are not readable on phone any longer

When I open a word document on my phone, the pages are on top of each other. The document looks fine on my computer. I ran updates, restarted phone, etc. The first image is off the phone, the 2nd off the computer (I only included the first page). This is new, it was not doing this before.

    Hi Laura,

Since the document displays correctly on the desktop version of Word, the file itself does not appear to be corrupted.

You may try the suggestion provided in the AI answer and open the document directly in the Word mobile app instead of the Teams viewer. This can help determine whether the issue is related to the Teams mobile rendering experience or affects the document in Word Mobile as well.

If the document displays correctly in Word Mobile, the issue is likely isolated to Teams on the mobile device.

If the issue persists, or if the same behavior occurs in both Teams and Word Mobile, consider asking your IT administrator to open a support request with Microsoft Support. It would be helpful to provide the screenshots, the affected device details, and whether other users experience the same issue.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you need further assistance.

Open the document in the dedicated Word mobile app rather than the Teams inline viewer; this is the most practical workaround for the overlapping-page rendering shown in the screenshot.

Open it in Word on the iPhone

    1. In Teams, open the document and tap ….
    2. If Open in is available, select Open in Word.
    3. If that option is absent:
      • Open the Word app and sign in with the same work account.
      • Tap Open and select the Microsoft 365 team site or OneDrive location containing the document.
      • Locate and open the file.

Microsoft documents opening files from Microsoft 365 storage through the corresponding Office app on iOS, and directs mobile users to the respective Office app for mobile editing.^1^ ^2^

This is a workaround for the Teams preview, not a guaranteed permanent repair. Word mobile is more likely to preserve the landscape layout and positioned content, but complex desktop formatting can still display differently on a phone.

    Check the result

    • Correct in Word but overlapping in Teams: the saved document is likely intact, and the problem is isolated to Teams’ mobile preview. Continue opening it in Word and report the Teams behavior to your Microsoft 365 administrator.
    • Overlapping in both Teams and Word: test one ordinary .docx file without columns, text boxes, or positioned graphics.
      • If only this document fails, its complex layout is triggering a mobile-rendering limitation.
      • If multiple documents fail, the problem is broader in the mobile Word/Teams environment.

If Word presents a Mobile View/Print Layout control, switch to Print Layout. Microsoft documents that Print Layout preserves the printed-page appearance and objects more faithfully, whereas Mobile View reflows content and may omit some objects.^3^ That documentation specifically applies to Android phones, so the control’s location or availability may differ on iPhone.

Since updates and a phone restart have already made no difference, there is no value in repeating those steps.

If it affects multiple users or documents

    Have the Microsoft 365 administrator:

    1. Check Microsoft 365 admin center → Health → Service health for active Teams, SharePoint Online, or Microsoft 365 Apps incidents.
    2. If no incident is listed, open a Microsoft support case and include:
      • iPhone model and iOS version
      • Teams and Word app versions
      • Whether the file displays correctly in Word mobile
      • Whether other documents or users are affected
      • Both screenshots and a sanitized sample document, if possible

There is no confirmed Microsoft bulletin in the available product guidance for this exact overlapping-page symptom, so the Word-versus-Teams test is the key evidence for escalation.
