Hello,

I am experiencing an issue with Microsoft Edge on Linux. When I start typing in text fields on websites, the page becomes unresponsive (but scrollable) or freezes temporarily. The operating system itself and edge continues to work normally,i have to undo this by closing the tab and the issue appears to be limited to Edge.

Environment:

  • OS: CachyOS x86_64
  • Kernel: Linux 7.2.9
  • Desktop Environment: Cinnamon 6.6.9
  • Window Manager: Muffin (X11)
  • CPU: Intel Core i3-6006U @ 2.00 GHz
  • GPU: Intel HD Graphics 520
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Microsoft Edge Version: Versión 155.0.4283.45-1

More on my Issue:

  • The problem occurs when typing into text boxes, search bars, or web forms.
  • The affected tab or page stops responding while input is being entered.
  • The rest of the system remains responsive.
  • The issue seems to be specific to Microsoft Edge. Hadnt tested on chromium or firefox yet

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Navigate to a website containing a text input field.
  3. Begin typing.
  4. Observe that the page becomes unresponsive but scrollable with no processor issues or literally freezes.

Troubleshooting Performed:

  • Restarted the website.
  • Verified system resource usage (CPU and RAM).
  • Confirmed sufficient available memory and storage.
  • No system-wide freezes are observed.
  • Did whatever google and copilot told me to do

Questions:

  • Is this a known issue with Microsoft Edge on Linux?
  • Could it be related to spell checking, text input services, hardware acceleration, or Cinnamon/X11 compatibility?
  • Can they get this fixed?
  • Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

The most useful next step is to isolate Edge’s writing assistance first, because the freeze is triggered specifically by text entry, then test GPU acceleration and profile components separately before filing a reproducible Edge report.

There is a closely matching public report for Edge 154 on Ubuntu involving freezes while typing, particularly when pressing Space, but it has no accepted resolution ^1^. Microsoft’s current known-issues page does not list this exact Edge 155/Linux text-input problem ^2^.

    Run these targeted tests

Since system resources and storage are already ruled out, avoid repeating those checks. Test after each change so the responsible component can be identified.

    1. Disable writing assistance
      • Open edge://settings/languages.
      • Under Writing assistance, turn off Use grammar and spell-check assistance.
      • Fully close Edge, reopen it, and type on the same affected Google page.
Edge normally uses Microsoft Editor for spelling and grammar; selecting Basic performs local spellchecking instead. If disabling assistance fixes the freeze, re-enable it and select Basic to determine whether only Microsoft Editor triggers it ^3^.
    2. Disable graphics acceleration
      • Open edge://settings/system.
      • Turn off Use graphics acceleration when available.
      • Relaunch Edge when prompted and repeat the test.
If this fixes the issue, the Intel graphics/rendering path is implicated; keep acceleration disabled temporarily and update the system’s Mesa/Intel graphics packages before retesting. Microsoft documents disabling graphics acceleration as the isolation step for graphics-related Edge hangs ^4^.
    3. Disable every extension
      • Open edge://extensions.
      • Disable all extensions, including writing, translation, ad-blocking, and Google-related extensions.
      • Relaunch and test.
      • If the problem disappears, enable extensions individually until it returns.
    4. Test another Edge profile
      • Select the profile icon → Set up new personal profile.
      • Do not enable synchronization or install extensions.
      • Test typing on the affected sites.
If the clean profile works, the fault is in the original profile’s settings, extension state, or synchronized data—not the Edge installation.
    5. Compare browsers
      • Reproduce the same input sequence in Chromium and Firefox.
      • Record whether ordinary letters work but Space, backspace, accented characters, or autocomplete triggers the freeze.
If Chromium also freezes, investigate the shared Chromium/input/graphics stack. If only Edge freezes, include that distinction in the Edge bug report.

    Platform limitation

CachyOS is Arch-based and is not one of Microsoft’s officially supported Edge Linux distributions. Microsoft lists Ubuntu, Debian, openSUSE, and Fedora; other distributions might run Edge but are not officially supported ^5^.

That does not prove CachyOS caused the failure, but it limits Microsoft’s ability to validate Cinnamon/Muffin, Arch packaging, and rolling-release library combinations. For a decisive comparison, reproduce it using the official Edge package on a supported distribution—ideally from a live USB or separate installation—without changing the existing CachyOS system.

Changing from X11 to Wayland is only a relevant test if the Cinnamon login screen actually offers a supported Wayland session. Do not treat it as the primary fix; the available evidence does not establish an X11 cause.

    Report it with actionable diagnostics

Your 155.0.4283.45 build is the current documented Edge 155 Stable release ^6^. If all four isolation tests fail:

    1. Open edge://version and copy:
      • Full version
      • Executable path
      • Profile path
      • Command-line flags
    2. Open edge://crashes and note any crash ID. A renderer hang may produce no crash ID.
    3. Go to Settings and more → Help and feedback → Send feedback.
    4. Include:
      • CachyOS, kernel, Cinnamon and X11 versions
      • Intel HD 520 and graphics/Mesa version
      • Exact affected URL and keystroke
      • Results for spell-check off, acceleration off, extensions off, and clean profile
      • Chromium/Firefox comparison
    5. Attach a recording if it does not expose private typed content. Edge feedback can include screenshots, files, recordings, the current URL, and diagnostic information ^3^.

The current evidence supports a possible Edge/Chromium Linux regression, but not a confirmed spell-check, X11, Cinnamon, font-cache, or GPU root cause.
