IMac Pro too old - have I wasted subscription of £84.99?

The microsoft365 automatically renewed in July 2026 but I didn’t use it until September. It wouldn’t ‘save’ or ‘print’. I now realize that my MacBook Pro (version 10.15.8) is too old. Is there any way I can at least print what I have?

If your MacOS is Catalina (10.15.8) and you are unable to upgrade your MacOS to a new version (12 or higher), then the Microsoft 365 apps will go into read only mode, your existing documents cannot be edited and you cannot create new documents.

If you open a document, are you unable to print the document even though your Office apps are in read only mode?

If not, if you upload the documents to your OneDrive (https://onedrive.live.com/) in a web browser, are you then able to open your documents from there in the free online version of the Office apps and print your documents from there?

Yes. If Office on macOS is in reduced functionality mode, the apps can still open and print files even though they cannot edit, save, or create new files.

    For printing on the Mac:

    1. Open the file in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or OneNote.
    2. Try File > Print.
    3. If printing does not work, first install all Apple software updates:
      • Select the Apple menu in the top-left corner.
      • Choose Software Update.
      • Install any available updates.
      • Restart the Mac and try printing again.
    4. Test printing from another Mac app such as Notes:
      • Open Notes.
      • Open or create a note.
      • Select File > Print.
      • If Notes prints successfully, the issue is likely with the Office installation.
      • If Notes also cannot print, the issue is more likely the printer driver or printer configuration.
    5. If other apps cannot print either, remove and re-add the printer:
      • Open System Preferences.
      • Select Printers & Scanners.
      • Select the printer.
      • Click Delete (-).
      • Click Add (+) and add the printer again.

For macOS 10.15.8 specifically, the device is below macOS 12. Context indicates older macOS versions can enter reduced functionality mode after July 13, 2026, and installing an older Office version will not fix that licensing update requirement.
