To remove and reinstall Word on a MacBook Air, use this clean approach.
- Quit all Office apps, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- In Finder > Applications, locate the Office apps and move them to Trash.
- To remove leftover Office files, in Finder press Command + Shift + G, enter ~/Library, and open Containers.
- Move these folders to Bin if they exist:
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Microsoft Outlook
- Microsoft OneNote
- Microsoft Error Reporting
- com.microsoft.Office365ServiceV2
- com.microsoft.RMS-XPCService
- com.microsoft.netlib.shipassertprocess
- Go back to ~/Library and open Group Containers. Move these folders to Bin if present:
- UBF8T346G9.ms
- UBF8T346G9.Office
- UBF8T346G9.OfficeOsfWebHost
Warning: removing Outlook-related folders can delete Outlook data stored on the Mac. Back up those folders first if Outlook data is needed.
- Restart the Mac.
- If the issue may be related to activation or an old license, run the Microsoft license removal tool:
- Download the tool.
- Open the
.pkg file from Downloads.
- Select Continue and complete the setup.
- Select Install to remove Office licenses.
- Open Word and sign in with the account associated with the license.
Warning: the license removal tool removes all Microsoft 365 for Mac licenses from the Mac. Make sure the correct account information is available before using it.
- Reinstall Office apps. If using a one-time purchase/perpetual license on Mac, Word can be reinstalled directly from Microsoft using the Word download listed in the Mac App Store activation article, or by using the full Mac installer package for the Office version that matches the license.
If only Word is the problem, the uninstall steps above still remove the full Office app set and related files, which is the supported cleanup method in the provided guidance.
