I have an input form in an excel workbook and I used to be able to copy cells from the workbook into the form text boxes using the normal copy and paste functions - ctrl + v or right click paste but neither of those work any longer, I have to use shift+insert. How do I fix this?? My code for the input form has not been changed. I have tried all the coding potential issues and I don't seem to have any of them to fix. Please help.

    Hi Carolyn,

Based on what you shared, since Shift+Insert still pastes successfully, the form’s TextBox can receive clipboard content. So the issue is more likely related to how Excel handles Ctrl+V.

    I suggest trying these steps:

1/ Check where Ctrl+V can fail

Please copy a cell and try pasting into a normal worksheet cell, into Notepad, and into the form TextBox. Then let me know whether Ctrl+V fails only in the form, throughout Excel, or in all applications.

2/ Test Excel in Safe Mode

    • Press the Windows key + R and enter excel /safe > OK to run
    • Open the workbook, enable its macros if prompted, and test the form
    • If Ctrl+V works in Safe Mode, disable add-ins
      • Go to File > Options > Add-ins > select COM Add-ins > Go
      • Clear the add-ins temporarily and restart Excel normally
      • Re-enable them individually until the issue returns.
      • Repeat the same steps for Excel Add-ins

    3/ Repair your Office

If there are any updates regarding the issue, please don't hesitate to reach out again. I'm happy to assist you further.

For an Excel input form on Windows where normal paste into text boxes stopped working but Shift+Insert still works, the most relevant fixes are:

    1. Check whether Excel is running in multiple instances If the workbook with the form is open in one Excel instance and copied data is coming from another workbook in a different Excel instance, Excel can fall back to Windows paste handling instead of Excel’s internal paste behavior. Open both workbooks in the same Excel instance and test paste again.
    2. Verify Paste Options is enabled In Excel, go to File > Options > Advanced. Under Cut, copy and paste, make sure Show Paste Options button when content is pasted is checked.
    3. Check whether events are clearing the clipboard A Worksheet_SelectionChange event can clear the clipboard and disable normal Paste Special behavior. If the workbook uses event code, test with events disabled:
      • In VBA Immediate Window, set Application.EnableEvents = False
      • Test paste into the form text box again
If this restores normal paste behavior, an event procedure is interfering.
    4. Start Excel in Safe Mode to rule out add-ins Third-party add-ins can conflict with paste behavior.
      • Find the Excel shortcut
      • Hold CTRL and double-click Excel
      • Click Yes to start in Safe Mode
      • Open the workbook and test paste into the form
If paste works in Safe Mode, re-enable add-ins one at a time until the conflicting add-in is identified.
    5. Install the latest Office updates Excel had a known issue where paste could fail silently with no message. Microsoft fixed this in updated builds:
      • Office LTSC 2024: Build 17932.21000
      • Office LTSC 2021: Build 14334.20918
      • Office LTSC 2019: Build 10417.20211
      • Office 2016: fixed in KB 5002665
If normal paste stopped working recently, updating Office is a primary fix.
    6. Use Paste Special as a workaround If standard paste fails, try Home > Paste dropdown > Paste Special and choose the needed option such as Values or Formulas where applicable.

A practical order for this case is:

    1. Open everything in one Excel instance.
    2. Start Excel in Safe Mode and test.
    3. Check File > Options > Advanced > Show Paste Options button when content is pasted.
    4. Test with Application.EnableEvents = False.
    5. Update Office to the latest build.
